SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - A special ribbon cutting was held Monday afternoon (Sept. 30) to officially open a new food pantry and educational center in Shreveport.

Martha's Market will serve senior citizens and other people living below the poverty line in the 71106 ZIP code.

The market at 277 Mount Zion Road in Shreveport was made possible by donations from a number of community organizations and is staffed by volunteers. Clients are allowed to pick their own groceries based on personal needs.

In addition to supplying food, Martha's Market will feature an educational center providing resources like healthy cooking demonstrations, health education and more. Clients can join workshops that teach ways to make healthy, cost-effective meals.

"Martha's Market is more than just a food pantry. It's a hub for education and empowerment, offering our neighbors the tools they need to make healthier choices while addressing the critical issue of hunger in our community," said Martha Marak, executive director of the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana.
