Former Alabama wide receiver in line to make his NFL debut on Sunday

Former Alabama wide receiver Tyrell Shavers will be eligible to make his NFL debut on Sunday when the Buffalo Bills play the Houston Texans.

The Bills elevated Shavers to active status from their practice squad on Saturday to make him eligible for Sunday's game. Buffalo brought up Shavers with leading receiver Khalil Shakir sidelined this week by an ankle injury.

In three seasons with the Crimson Tide, Shavers had one reception and scored a touchdown on a blocked punt. After a redshirt year, he played in 28 games in 2018 and 2019 for Alabama.

Shavers had nine receptions after transferring to Mississippi State in 2020, then he played at San Diego State for two seasons. After catching 38 passes for 643 yards and three touchdowns for the Aztecs in 2022, Shavers signed with the Bills as a rookie free agent.

Shavers spent the 2023 NFL season on Buffalo's practice squad without playing in a regular-season game, and he has been back in that role in 2024.

  • Two other players with Alabama football roots could make their 2024 season debuts on Sunday:

    · The Los Angeles Rams restored cornerback Darious Williams ( UAB ) to their active roster from injured reserve on Saturday. Williams returned to practice this week after missing the first four games of the season because of a hamstring injury. The Rams play the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

    · The Pittsburgh Steelers restored outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon (Hoover) to their active roster from injured reserve on Saturday. Moon returned to practice this week after missing the first four games of the season because of an ankle injury. The Steelers play the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

Three other players from Alabama high schools and colleges were elevated from practice squads to active status for Sunday's games – Cleveland Browns cornerback Tony Brown (Alabama), Dallas Cowboys defensive end Carl Lawson ( Auburn ) and Minnesota Vikings defensive back Bobby McCain (Oxford).

Each NFL team can elevate two members of its practice squad to active status for each game. But no practice-squad member can be elevated more than three times in a season.

This is the third elevation for Brown and Lawson. For them to play again after Sunday, they will have to be signed to the 53-man active roster.

That's what happened with Chicago Bears defensive tackle Byron Cowart (Auburn) on Saturday. Cowart reached his limit of elevations in the first four weeks of the season, so the Bears signed him to their 53-man active roster on Saturday to make him eligible for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.
