Former Pistons guard and NBA MVP waived by Grizzlies

After suiting up last season in the same city and state where he played college ball, Derrick Rose is on the move again. According to The Athletic's Shams Charania , the Memphis Grizzlies are waiving Rose.

Over the past 12 years, Rose has battled a litany of injuries that have hindered his NBA career. Should he land with a new team, it would be yet another franchise since his departure from the Bulls in 2016.

In addition to the Bulls and Grizzlies, since 2016, he has played for the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons.

The 2011 NBA MVP signed with the Pistons during the 2019 free agency period and quickly established himself in the rotation. In the season-opening win over the Indiana Pacers, he scored 18 points on 54% shooting from the field and added nine assists.

During that season, Rose became the first player in Pistons history to record seven consecutive 20-plus point games as a reserve, which also coincided with his career-high 14-game streak of scoring 20 points or more.

The following season in Detroit wasn't as fruitful, as he saw action in only 15 games. Just before the 2021 NBA trade deadline, the Pistons agreed to trade Rose to the Knicks, reuniting him with his former coach Tom Thibodeau.

In 65 games (15 starts) with the Pistons, Rose averaged 17.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 0.9 steals per game.

Rose still holds the distinction of being the NBA's youngest MVP, winning the award in 2011 at 22 years old during his third season with the Bulls. He beat out Dwight Howard, who finished second, LeBron James in third, and Kobe Bryant in fourth.

During that MVP year, Rose averaged 25 points, 7.7 assists, and one steal per game, guiding the Bulls to a league-best 61-21 record.
