Fort Myers residents receive letters about checking water pipe material

Many people living on Columbus Street in Fort Myers say they received a letter from the city asking them to check their water pipes. This is all happening because of new rules adopted by the Environmental Protection Agency.The EPA passed the lead and copper rule revision back in 2021, to make sure the United States has clean water.Since the city is only responsible for the pipes beyond the water meter on your property, officials sent these mailers out to homeowners to tell them they need help checking their pipes. "This house, like a lot of the houses in the neighborhood, has been plumbed many times over the years," said Chip Withrow, a Fort Myers resident. The city said you can easily identify what your pipes are made of by visiting the survey link on their website. There is an option on there to learn how to check the type of pipes you have. City officials say the goal right now is to identify as many unknowns as possible. Then they will work on a replacement plan. As of now, the city has checked nearly 25,000 service lines.They haven't discovered a single lead line.
