At least four people are dead and dozens more shot after a mass shooting in Birmingham Saturday night.

Investigators say calls about the shooting came to 911 around 11 p.m. Saturday from the Five Points South area. This part of Birmingham is known for its entertainment, restaurants, and bars, and is often crowded on Saturday nights.

When officers arrived, they discovered three people, two men and one woman, dead at the scene. A fourth victim later died at the hospital.

Investigators said dozens of others were shot, at least four of which have life-threatening injuries. Many of the victims were in the area when officers arrived while others were taken in private vehicles to nearby hospitals.

Investigators says early details point to multiple shooters. They believe the shooters fired multiple shots on a group of people outside on the sidewalk or in the street. There is no indication that any of the shootings happened inside a business. It is unclear if the shooters walked up or if this was a drive-by shooting. Investigators are looking into whether or not a 'switch' was used in the shooting. A switch is a device that allows a gun to act as an automatic weapon.

The Birmingham Police Department has asked the FBI and ATF to assist in the investigation. They are also asking the public to come forward if they have any information about those responsible for the shooting.

"There is no greater resource than the public," Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said. "We will do everything we possibly can to make sure we uncover, identify, and hunt down whoever is responsible for preying on our people this morning." Fitzgerald went on to say, "These mass shootings have more to do with culture than criminality."

Dajon Singleton driving into the area when he saw the emergency response following the mass shooting. While he didn't see when shots were fired, he saw the chaos that followed soon after.

"Probably about five or six that went out on a stretcher that I saw. I am sure there was probably more. Very devastating, sad," he said.

Singleton recalls the large amount of people in the area. Some running, some screaming.

"The grieving type screaming, like I know someone is hurt, or that passed away. That type. That's when I instantly knew someone lost a loved one."

He comes to the Five Points South area often on the weekends. He said he has never experienced anything like this here, but you can never be too safe.

"Things just happen, you just have to always keep your head on a swivel, and just be mindful of your surroundings."

Fitzgerald says the area where the shooting happened is saturated with cameras. They are asking all nearby businesses to contribute surveillance video from the shooting.
