Four guards at the Central State Prison in Macon were arrested last week on charges of violating their oath as public officers and providing false statements, according to the Bibb County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Department of Corrections.

The four guards, Tyrell Williams, Nelson Whitlow, Shanella Jones and April Ramsey also were fired from Central State Prison after their arrests on Sept. 10. Joan Heath, the director of communications for the Georgia Department of Corrections, said all four started working at the Macon prison in 2022.

Details of their arrest and the incident that led to it were unclear Friday.

"We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for individuals who choose to ignore their oath and jeopardize our non-negotiable mission of public safety," Heath said. "The actions of these individuals do not reflect the hundreds of officers who are committed to ensuring the safety of the public and the safe operations of our facilities."
