Fourth-quarter rallies headline Muskegon-area football roundup for Sept. 20

MUSKEGON, MI – There were plenty of late-game heroics and frantic fourth-quarter finishes around the West Michigan area on Friday night and many Muskegon-area football teams were involved in the theatrics. Muskegon, Mona Shores, Fruitport, and Whitehall used strong second-half efforts to pull away from their opponents to critical wins while teams such as North Muskegon, Ravenna and Reeths-Puffer kept their collective foot on the gas pedal as they cruised to impressive wins. Below are recaps of all of Friday night's games with the individual performances that had the biggest impacts on the outcome.Caledonia 36, Grand Haven 28 Andrew Willemsen rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries to pace the Grand Haven offense, while Will Korenstra caught five passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Luke Berry was 15-for-21 passing for 225 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, while Alex Dixon caught five passes for 52 yards and Xzavier Rodriguez caught six passes for 37 yards. Carson Tithof registered 5.5 tackles to lead the Grand Haven defense, while Jonah Broemer added 3.5 stops.Fruitport 35, Muskegon Catholic Central 14 Liam Campbell rushed for 122 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries to pace the Fruitport offense, while Kalan Teeter added 98 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries and Frankie Kotecki added 27 yards and one touchdown on seven carries. Brady Hanson was 2-for-5 passing for 54 yards and one touchdown, while DayDay Williams caught two passes for 54 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown reception. Blair Zimmer logged 10 tackles to anchor the Fruitport defense, while Kaidyn Hill added 5.5 tackles and Tay Thompson had 4.5 stops. Bryan Convertini rushed for 90 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries and was 3-for-7 passing for 28 yards to lead the Muskegon Catholic Central offense. Timmy Railling registered 13.5 tackles to anchor the Crusader defense, while Bode Zygmuntowski added nine stops, Bradley Richards had eight stops, and Will Fedewa and Convertini each had six.GR West Catholic 28, Spring Lake 25 Gabe Trask rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries to pace the Spring Lake offense, while Darrel Lawrence added 75 yards on 16 carries, Alex Batka had 37 yards on six carries and caught two passes for 33 yards and one touchdown and Owen Smies had 63 yards and one touchdown on eight carries. Reid Grimmer was 4-for-6 passing for 70 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 40 yards on seven carries, while Landon O'Donnell had two receptions for 37 yards. Grimmer led the Spring Lake defense with four tackles, while Oliver Smies and Chase Segaar each added three stops.Mona Shores 14, Byron Center 12 Jonathan Pittman was 7-of-9 passing for 100 yards and one touchdown and rushed 19 times for 108 yards to pace the Mona Shores offense, while Dominic Piggue added two carries for 13 yards and a 29-yard touchdown reception, Tomarion Steward added an 8-yard touchdown run and Micah Carefelle had two receptions for 45 yards. Bryce Colbert was 10-for-12 passing for 157 yards and one touchdown, while Landen Grimm rushed twice for 22 yards and one touchdown and caught two passes for 66 yards and one touchdown and TJ Byard caught three passes for 59 yards. Charlie Meyers logged 11 tackles, including two for loss, to anchor the North Muskegon defense, while Lucas Dye added five tackles, including one sack, and Henry Husmann, Jaxon Bean and Drew Bartos each added five stops.Muskegon 47, Forest Hills Northern 28 Keshawn Drummer rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries to pace the Muskegon offense, while James Young was 8-for-11 passing for 118 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 86 yards and Darekeo Speech added 17 yards and one touchdown on five carries. Arquez Petty caught four passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns and Dee Lawrence caught two passes for 27 yards and one touchdown. Darekeo Speech, Sani Benard, Amiere Chandler and La'Rue Phillips each registered six tackles to anchor the Big Red defense, while Lyn Wilson III added five tackles and one interception, Keyshawn Hinkle had five stops and Mhakai Lenox-Brooks hauled in two interceptions.Reeths-Puffer 48, Grand Rapids Union 13 Bryce Muskovin rushed for 225 yards and four touchdowns on five carries and added a 25-yard touchdown reception to power the Reeths-Puffer offense, while Darico Griggs rushed for 51 yards on 11 carries and Marvin Moore added an 85-yard touchdown reception and a 49-yard touchdown run. Mason Darke was 2-for-3 passing for 110 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Elliot Schneider registered 8.5 tackles to lead the Rocket defense, while Sage Secrest added five stops.Ludington 31, Oakridge 15 Cam Gunsell was 6-for-9 passing for 109 yards and one touchdown and rushed 26 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Ludington offense, while Max Flannery added 13 carries for 105 yards and one touchdown and had two receptions for 14 yards and Taj Williams caught three passes for 60 yards and one touchdown. Gunsell also led the Ludington defense with 11 tackles, while Jonah Peterson added three tackles and two interceptions and Cooper Holmes had six tackles.Ravenna 56, Shelby 14 Jaxson Wilburn rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on five carries to pace the Ravenna offense, while Derek Finlay added 91 yards and two touchdowns on five carries and caught three passes for 44 yards and one touchdown. Derek May completed five passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 39 yards and one touchdown on two carries, while Blake Eadie had 67 yards rushing and one touchdown on seven carries, Brady Karchinski rushed four times for 32 yards and Carson VanEns hauled in a 41-yard touchdown reception. Wilburn registered seven tackles to anchor the Bulldog defense, while Finlay and Isaac Korson each added five stops and VanEns, Brady Karchinski, and Brennan Buskirk each added four. Trevor Weiss hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jaylin Henderson to spark the Shelby offense, while AJ Melchor added a 1-yard touchdown run.Mason County Central 26, Centreville 14 Peyton Merz rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries and added an 85-yard kickoff return for a score to pace the Spartans, while Pierce Bladzik was 4-for-8 passing for 108 yards with one touchdown and one interception, Eathen Huffman hauled in a 55-yard reception and Quentin Lange had two receptions for 34 yards and one touchdown. Colter Kirchner registered eight tackles to lead the Mason County Central defense, while Dominic Greco added seven tackles and Gradyn Wilson had five stops.Fremont 41, Grant 6 Karter Frens rushed 21 times for 268 yards and two touchdowns, including a 97-yard scoring sprint in the second half, to pace the Fremont offense, while Khai Noordyk rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, and Brayden Crosley added 66 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries and was 3-for-7 passing for 16 yards. Asa Barnhard registered nine tackles, including one sack to anchor the Fremont defense, while Noordyk and Wyatt Shoemakers each added six tackles, including a half sack, Michael Robinson and Jacob Burns each had six stops and Jack VandenBerg had five tackles. Ethan DeLong rushed for 86 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries to pace the Grant offense. Jack Swanson registered 8.5 tackles to lead the Grant defense, while Paul Bonney added 6.5 stops, Ethan Dean had 5.5 tackles and Aiden Booth had five solo tackles.Kent City 30, Hart 6 Cooper Stinson rushed for 100 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries to pace the Kent City offense, while Logan Thompson added 85 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries, Cooper Houtman had 71 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries. Sammy Anderson rushed for 64 yards on 12 carries, while Andre Meade was 2-for-3 passing for 18 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 32 yards on six carries, and Grayson Preston had an 8-yard touchdown reception. Kale Freeland and Jaden Loomis-Sandison each recorded four tackles to anchor the Kent City defense, while Andrew Klotz added three tackles, including two for loss and one fumble recovery.Lakeview 46, White Cloud 13 Jayden Robinson paced White Cloud with 216 total yards and two touchdowns, including a kickoff return for a score and a touchdown pass to Edgar Rodriguez Jr. Jose Saavedra-Mena led the White Cloud defense with six tackles.Whitehall 42, Montague 7 Cam Thompson was 3-for-8 passing for 63 yards with one touchdown and one interception and rushed six times for 63 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Whitehall offense, while Ryan Goodrich rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown on nine carries and Gavin Craner added 58 yards on eight carries. Craner also led the Whitehall defense with 10 tackles, while Corde Anderson and Thompson each added nine stops. Fletcher Thommen rushed for 54 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries to pace the Montague offense, while Ryver Jarka rushed for 44 yards on 15 carries and was 3-for-6 passing for five yards and an interception.
