Freddie Prinze Jr. Says It Isn’t Difficult to Successfully Navigate a Life Away From the Spotlight
When it comes to being in the spotlight, actors Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who are husband and wife, have no interest in entertaining the "norm" surrounding fame and instead opt for a more quiet lifestyle.
During an interview on the "Oldish" podcast on Nov. 4, the 48-year-old opened up about why the couple decided to keep their family and romance out of the public eye as much as possible.
"I don't know how deliberate [others] are in trying to avoid that BS," Prinze said.
The actor was praised by co-host Randy Spelling, who said the move was admirable. Prinze reminded him it's an individual choice, adding, "You can control it to a certain degree."
"I know how easy it's been for us because I don't go anywhere. I don't go to parties. People don't see Sarah and I out and about at the popular places. We have our restaurants that we like, and they're not super trendy in places where paparazzi hang out. So we're good at avoiding it," he continued.
The "She's All That" star noted there are different ways you can successfully navigate life away from the tabloids, including paparazzi, adding that if you really want to avoid them, you can.
"There's times where [paparazzi] wait at the bottom of our street, but there's people that are way more famous than me on my street," he joked.
"So I'll just make sure they leave first. They'll go follow Schwarzenegger and leave me alone. You know what I mean?"
Prinze and Gellar first met on the set of the 1997 slasher film "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and recently celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary.
The couple share two children together—daughter Charlotte, 15, and son Rocky, 12—and prioritize protecting their privacy and living their life just like everybody else.
Prinze says there is no secret behind choosing to live this way, stressing, "It wasn't hard. ... We just don't like that life."
Prinze rose to fame in the mid-90s and has since appeared in nearly 60 film and television productions over the course of his career.
With 23 total award nominations, Prinze received the Mr. Golden Globe win in 1996.
He is set to reprise the role of Ray Bronson from the original "I Know What You Did Last Summer" film and its 1998 follow-up, with the sequel scheduled to hit theaters in July of next year.
Currently, Prinze also hosts and produces his podcast "Wrestling with Freddie," where as an enthusiast, he "pulls back the curtain on pro wrestling", as well as "That Was Pretty Scary," a horror-film-focused podcast series.
