Friday's high school football roundup: Joplin, Cotto lead Christiansburg past Cave Spring

Xavier Joplin and Izaiah Cotto combined for six rushing touchdowns as Christiansburg built a five-touchdown lead and beat Cave Spring 39-20 in River Ridge District action Friday night at Dwight Bogle Stadium in Roanoke.

Joplin finished with 189 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns for the Blue Demons (2-2), including a pair of 37-yard scoring runs, and Cotto ran for 141 yards on 10 carries with two rushing touchdowns and a 35-yard TD pass to Jacob Evans. Christiansburg totaled 402 yards on the ground.

The Knights (1-3) scored all of their points in the fourth quarter. Jackson Steffen and Drew Browning had rushing touchdowns, while Briggs Smithson caught a touchdown pass from Jaden Hollins.

Salem 42, Northside 21

Kyshead Arrington ran for 108 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Spartans topped the Vikings.

Josiah Persinger added 90 yards and two touchdowns for Salem (2-2), while Eli Taylor completed 11 of 15 passes for 228 yards with touchdown throws to Bryson Fraction and Anthony Snead. Dontay Davis had three sacks on defense and John Douglas notched two.

Mykell Harvey tallied 106 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries for Northside (3-1) and caught two passes for 48 yards. Javin Gibson went 18-of-32 for 233 yards with a 12-yard TD pass to Nyzyer Blank and one interception. Darrion King had seven receptions for 72 yards and Dakota Kelly added six catches for 68 yards.

Blacksburg 44, Rockbridge County 20

Jaxon Keys ran for 266 yards and totaled five touchdowns as the Bruins moved to 7-0 all-time against the Wildcats with a win in Lexington.

Keys scored four touchdowns on the ground and a caught a touchdown pass for Blacksburg (2-2), which finished with 335 rushing yards on 36 total carries.

Jayden Layman had a rushing touchdown and scored on a 76-yard pass from Elijah Watkins for Rockbridge County (0-4). Marshall Earhart also scored on the ground.

Princeton (W.Va.) 62, Pulaski County 0

The Cougars suffered their first shutout loss since 2013 in a defeat to an out-of-state opponent in Dublin.

Trevor Gallimore picked up 44 yards on 16 carries for Pulaski County (0-3), which fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2011.

Magna Vista 40, Franklin County 21

The Warriors scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Eagles for a victory in Ridgeway.

Tahjir Hairston ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries for Magna Vista (2-1), while Ethan Dukes added two scores on the ground. Simeon Moore completed 5 of 10 passes for 148 yards, hitting Tyler Martin on a 78-yard touchdown throw, and ran for 28 yards on eight carries with a touchdown Torian Younger notched three receptions for 57 yards.

Winston Davenport connected with Ethan Yeary twice in the end zone and finished with 138 yards on 10-of-21 passing. Yeary collected 104 yards on four receptions, Rashaun Hughey added 56 yards rushing on 16 carries. Kaleb Smith had a 72-yard kickoff return touchdown.

William Byrd 33, Bassett 0

Cannin Lutz scored four touchdowns as the Terriers recorded their third straight shutout with a win over the Bengals in Vinton.

Lutz completed 15 of 19 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns for William Byrd (4-0), and added a 13-yard scoring run. Jerrett Shepherd had touchdown receptions of 80 and 34 yards and finished with 120 yards on five catches, while Jamez Toler had 90 yards on three catches, including a 77-yard scoring reception, and ran for 54 yards on 12 carries. Connor Whitehead hit a 42-yard field goal, and the Terriers defense recorded a safety.

William Byrd is 4-0 for the first time since 2018 and has outscored its opponents 182-6.

Lord Botetourt 68, Appomattox County 10

The Cavaliers walloped the Raiders in Daleville with their second 60-point outing of the season.

Stats for Lord Botetourt (3-1) were not submitted.

Glenvar 63, Hidden Valley 0

Brody Dawyot totaled four touchdowns as the Highlanders recorded their third shutouts of the season with a victory over the Titans in Salem.

Dawyot completed 9 of 13 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns for Glenvar (4-0), connecting with Tre Dawyot for an 85-yard score, Peyton Deel for an 8-yard score and Jace Forster for a 26-yard score, and ran for 92 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Deel also had an interception on defense for the Highlanders, who have outscored their opponents 187-8.

Hidden Valley (0-4) was shut out for the fourth straight time to start the season and has been outscored 267-0.

William Fleming 41, Patrick Henry 13

The Colonels scored 28 unanswered points to pull away from the Patriots and claim their first regular season win over their crosstown rival since 2014.

Malachi Coleman ran for 125 yards on 16 carries with scoring runs of 19 and 65 yards for William Fleming (4-0). Jycer Preston went 5-of-8 for 108 yards with an interception and scored on a 55-yard scamper. Omarza Gray caught three passes for 48 yards, and Davion Faulkner, Jayden Robinson and Za'mondre Spinner all added rushing scores. The Colonels totaled 329 yards on the ground.

Damarion Perdue scored both touchdowns for Patrick Henry (2-2), on carries of 2 and 3 yards, and finished with 16 yards on seven carries. Seth Shepherd went 7-of-19 for 109 yards with two picks, and Julius Davis notched 79 yards on four receptions.

Fredericksburg Christian 49, Roanoke Catholic 12

Damarcus Brown caught eight passes for 189 yards and scored two touchdowns but the Celtics fell to the Eagles.

Brown tallied touchdowns of 85 and 75 yards for Roanoke Catholic (2-2), hauling in passes from Mason Williams, who went 12-of-21 for 141 yards, and Yajahe Smith on his only throw of the game.

North Cross 35, Atlantic Shores Christian 8

Brock Miles threw four touchdowns and racked up 326 yards on 12-of-17 passing as the Raiders marched past the Seahawks in Roanoke.

Jaziel Hart earned 168 yards receiving and two touchdowns on three receptions for North Cross (4-1), while Jase Rhodes tallied 105 yards and a score on four catches. Daniel Skoog added a touchdown reception.

Heritage 21, Jefferson Forest 7

The Cavaliers surrendered two fourth-quarter touchdowns and fell to the Pioneers in Lynchburg in an early-season battle of undefeated teams.

Dylan Marks scored the lone touchdown of the night for Jefferson Forest (3-1) on a 3-yard run. He finished with 49 yards on the ground and 79 through the air with an interception, while Thax Rowland added 53 yards rushing.

Staunton River 45, Tunstall 0

Six different players found the end zone as the Golden Eagles recorded their second straight shutout with a victory over the Trojans in Moneta.

Macon Ayers scored a rushing touchdown on offense and had a fumble recovery touchdown on defense for Staunton River (3-1), while Jayden Bonds rushed for 75 yards and a score on five carries. Patrick Chewning went 4-of-8 through the air for 67 yards, hitting Parker Chewning in the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown. Brady Barns and Gavin Huff added rushing scores.

Alleghany 42, Greenbrier East (W.Va.) 7

Des Jordan totaled four touchdowns as the Cougars cruised past the Spartans in Covington.

It's the first 4-0 start for an Alleghany team since 2010 and first for a Covington team since 1991. The two schools merged last year.

Jordan finished with three passing touchdowns, going 9-of-13 for 124 yards with scoring throws to Xzavier Hayslett, Sarge Persinger and Hunter Knighton, and ran in a 7-yard touchdown, ending with 31 yards on four carries. Knighton also recorded a rushing touchdown, Jay Godfrey had a 79-yard interception return touchdown and Carter Nicely rushed for 79 yards on 11 carries.

Radford 34, Galax 0

Luke Gaither threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns as the Bobcats blanked the Maroon Tide in a matchup of defending state champions.

Gaither completed 20 of 31 passes for Radford (3-1) with a 14-yard scoring strike to Sincere Taylor and a 21-yard scoring strike to Jaden Hendricks. Taylor finished with 94 yards on seven catches, and JD Grubb and Keymoni Kimbrough added rushing touchdowns. Louis Webster hit field goals of 36 and 27 yards.

Kenyon Brown led Galax (0-4) with 45 yards on 20 carries.

Grayson County 42, Floyd County 15

The Goad brothers accounted for five touchdowns as the Blue Devils rolled past the Buffaloes.

Maverik Goad threw touchdowns passes of 40 and 10 yards to Mac Goad and had an interception return touchdown on defense, as did Mac Goad, while Makray Goad scored on a six-yard run and went 6-for-6 on PATs. Aaron Peterson added a 76-yard touchdown run for Grayson County (2-2).

Max Harris ran for 71 yards on seven carries for Floyd County (2-2), scoring a 40-yard run following a lateral pass from Aiden Bain after a 9-yard reception from Sam Phillips. Phillips added a 10-yard touchdown run.

Martinsville 33, Dan River 9

Caden Martin scored four touchdowns as the Bulldogs bullied their way to a home win over the Wildcats.

Martin ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns for Martinsville (2-2) on 14 carries, adding a 21-yard TD reception from De'Veono Lowe, who added a 1-yard scoring run. Elijah Dixon had two interceptions and a fumble recovery on defense.

Patrick County 34, Chatham 21

Four different players collected touchdowns as the Cougars topped the Cavaliers.

Calvin Lancaster, Easton Harris, Jayden Corns and Avone Kidd all scored for Patrick County (3-1).

Narrows 21, Giles 20 (OT)

After Gavin Hazelwood caught a 3-yard game-tying touchdown pass from Hunter Owens, Cooper Helvey converted the PAT to lift the Green Waves to an overtime victory.

Trevor Ratcliffe scored on an 8-yard rush the Spartans to start overtime, but the PAT was no good.

Helvey finished with 132 yards on 19 carries with a 60-yard touchdown run for Narrows (2-1), while Owens completed of 8 of 22 passes for 91 yards and two scores, including a 10-yard scoring strike to Elijah Knoetze.

Ratcliffe totaled 195 yards and three touchdowns, including a 69-yard scoring burst, on 24 carries for Giles (0-3), which erased a 14-0 third-quarter deficit to force overtime.

Parry McCluer 55, Stonewall Jackson 0

Nathan Glass connected with Jase Barger twice in the end zone and had an interception return touchdown on defense as the Fighting Blues throttled the Generals in Buena Vista.

Glass finished with 96 yards on 7-of-16 passing for Parry McCluer (3-1), while Barger added a touchdown run. Jeremiah Brockenbrough rushed for 125 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Bath County 67, Meadow Bridge (W.Va.) 12

Wyatt Campbell racked up five touchdowns as the Chargers blasted the Wildcats in West Virginia.

Campbell ran for 122 yards and three scores on eight carries and threw for 107 yards with two scores on 5-of-9 passing for Bath County (4-0). Ethan Bryant rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, Luke Turned added 99 yards and two scores on four carries and Braiden Mabe recorded touchdown receptions of 15 and 36 yards. Jeremy Burns had 10 tackles, three of which went for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery on defense.

The Chargers totaled 480 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.

Eastside 20, Chilhowie 0

The Warriors were held to 154 yards of total offense and were blanked by the Spartans.

Asher Chapman threw for 155 yards for Chilhowie (2-2), while Noah Hill caught three passes for 50 yards and Luke Mullinax caught four passes for 41 yards.

George Wythe 42, Carroll County 7

Trey Rainey rushed for 252 yards on 21 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Maroons routed the Cavaliers in Hillsville.

Shane Huff added 178 yards for George Wythe (2-2) on 13-of-17 passing with touchdown throws to Cade Bralley, who had three receptions for 50 yards, and Kaiden Irby.

Landon Horton led Carroll County (3-1) with 86 yards on 12 carries, scoring his team's lone points on a 66-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Tazewell 51, Fort Chiswell 7

The Pioneers avoided a shutout but fell to the Bulldogs on the road.

Brayden Billings caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Cam Alley for the lone score of the night for Fort Chiswell (0-4), which has been outscored 190-26 this season.

Gate City 34, Marion 0

The Scarlet Hurricanes mustered just three first down and were blanked by the Blue Devils.

Marion (0-4) was held to 53 yards of offense and reached enemy territory only twice.
