Friday's letters: If Harris followed Trump's example, she could hatch a fake elector scheme

A fake-elector scheme?

After the election last night, I had a dream that I was living in an alternate reality.

The dream begins with the fact that the Constitution gives the vice president the task of certifying the Electoral College vote count sent in by each state. This is true in my dream ... and in reality.

In this presidential election (2024), dream and reality, certification will be done by Vice President Harris!

Now, the dream diverges from reality.

Harris, in the dream, was badly losing the election, and thinks that Trump and his supporters had a great idea: Stop the electoral count and use fake electors to send in bogus state counts. She knew that federal pardons for any wrongdoing, after her election, would not be a problem.

I really can't tell you how this nightmare ends, as my screams were waking up the neighbors.

To the American majority: don't cry to me!

You voted to give oligarchs freedom to rip you off and destroy our environment with impunity. You have turned this country over to the very people that have rigged the economy to percolate wealth up to themselves while driving many families into perpetual debt.

You rejected the first presidential candidate in decades who had the guts, conviction and expertise to take on abusive corporate behavior and restore an economy that works for the people not against them.

You have voted to overturn everything Joe Biden did to get us out of the despair and economic recession left by Donald Trump's refusal to mount an effective COVID-19 response. One million Americans died, 232,000 due to lack of vaccination. Soon an "anti-vaxxer" will lead our national health services.

You rejected Biden's comprehensive response to climate change, despite having recently witnessed a catastrophic global-warming-related event that wiped out a good portion of our state.

You doomed your children to live in perpetual indebted servitude on a planet that threatens their very existence.

"Heads I win, tails you lose" is a mockery of democracy. Donald Trump promised that you will never have to vote in another election again. You heard it. You voted for it. Future elections will become meaningless.

My uncle, who died in St. Lo France, and all the people who died fighting to save democracy from tyranny and fascism, have died in vain.

Now write to tell me why!

I have not yet heard or read any explanation (say, from a math or statistics professor) for why the polling figures were so wrong, especially since the consensus seemed to be that this election was the equivalent of a "coin toss."

A son lost to diabetes

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic condition that occurs when the body's immune system destroys the pancreas' insulin-producing cells. Without insulin, blood sugar levels rise, leading to many symptoms and complications.T1D is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States.

Simon, our son, had undiagnosed T1D and passed away from diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in 2022. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening complication of T1D. Simon was a junior at UNC Charlotte. He was a mechanical engineering major and math minor with a 4.0 GPA.

We wish we knew about T1D and DKA and maybe Simon would be with us today engineering a solution for the world. Simon was so smart! We miss Simon every day, and our hearts are broken for the rest of our lives. We do not wish this feeling on any parents!

Thankfully, Americans across the country and the spectrum spoke loud and clear on Election Day. Democrats have forced their agenda on this country long enough with horrible consequences. Voters finally showed we've had enough.

By the way, to all the self-centered celebrities and athletes Democrats have consistently leaned on to rally everyday Americans to help their cause: You failed!

I'm one who heard so many say they would leave the U.S. if Trump won. The good news is that you won't have any trouble finding legions of Americans to help you pack your U-Haul. Happy trails!
