From fraudsters to on-air tantrums over profits - all The Block's most outrageous auction moments as D-Day looms for Season 20

The Block Australia will put five lavish holiday homes on Phillip Island under the hammer on Sunday November 10, putting a cap on the show's 20th season. From Blockheads going home empty-handed to 'fake bids' and cheating scandals, Auction Day on Nine's renovation hit has a long history of drama. So ahead of this year's historic grand finale, here's a look back at some of the show's most outrageous Auction Day moments. High Flying Bidders - Adrian Portelli and Danny Wallis Adrian Portelli created a sensation when he rocked up to Auction Day in 2022 in a bright yellow Lamborghini - a moment that earned him the nickname 'Mr Lambo' . And the 34-year-old billionaire created a viral sensation when he went head-to-head with The Block bidding veteran Danny Wallis over the house renovated by Omar Slaimankhel and Ozman 'Oz' Abu Malik. The entrepreneur began the bidding at $500,000 above the reserve price, shocking fans, Wallis and the entire cast and crew of The Block. Portelli ended up dropping an eye-watering $5,666,666.66 on the property. Ultimately Omar and Oz raked in a record-breaking $1.6million in profit after Adrian and Danny's bidding war. The young entrepreneur's aggressive bidding style led to rumours he was in cahoots with the Blockheads. To put a stop to the speculation, Adrian later bought Sharon Johal and Ankur Dogra's house in a post-auction private sale for $4.25million. He raffled the house off through his promotions business LMCT+ and has since been in and out of headlines for a myriad of controversies. From craning a $2million Formula 1 car into a multimillion-dollar penthouse to attempting to hide hooning charges, Portelli has managed to stay in the public eye. He then stunned fans on Auction Day 2023 when he splashed $5million on Steph and Gian Ottavio house, netting the couple $1.75million profit and sending them home winners . He also bought Eliza and Liberty Paschke's pad for $4.3million after bidding against himself, a first for The Block. Despite helping two teams net a combined $2.7million, the flashy businessman wasn't done showing off his deep pockets . He also swooped into buy Kyle and Leslie's home for $3.1 million, spending a total of $12.4 million on the three homes. Danny Wallis, meanwhile, has been stirring controversy on The Block since his debut appearance during the grand finale in 2012. The high-flying IT entrepreneur and philanthropist has since spent more than $30million buying property during final auctions. Notorious for his bizarre bidding techniques, which include consulting his dog and bidding in cents, he is the show's best-known buyer for the sheer amount of properties he bids on. He has previously described his bidder style, which sometimes involves staring down and intimidating other buyers, as 'theatre'. Danny's bidding style saw him buy Mitch Edwards and Mark McKie's house for $4,044,444.44 in 2021. He also snapped up Tanya and Vito Guccione's for $3,800,000.01, and Kirsty Lee Akers and Jesse Anderson's for $4,401,523.67 that same season. During the 2020 series, Danny also spent big and bought three apartments for just under $12million after purchasing properties in the 2016 and 2012 seasons . Danny is a philanthropist who gives away many of the homes he buys to children's cancer charities. He has donated multiple homes to the My Room Children's Cancer Charity and Ronald McDonald House for use by terminally ill children and their families. Despite walking away with three houses last year, he was forced to drop millions more than he planned thanks to Portelli's competing bids. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see whether the pair will duel it out again this year on Phillip Island. Emese Fajk the Alleged Fraudulent Buyer One of the most bizarre Block finales came in 2020 when a bidder grabbed Jimmy and Tam Wilkins house for $4.2million. But the 'buyer' Emese Fajk stunned Channel Nine producers when she failed to pay up. Jimmy and Tam Wilkins were put through a rollercoaster of emotions after being told they won The Block with a record-breaking $966,000 profit . However, their dreams were soon dashed right before Christmas when it was revealed the cybersecurity specialist, 32, wasn't coughing up the cash. The Hungarian-born woman was accused of forging bank documents which showed she transferred the money to Nine Network's trust account on December 17, 2020. However, despite the screengrabs she sent to producers of the transfer from her ANZ account, the deposit never arrived and the final settlement failed. Fajk blamed her conveyancer for the bungle and claimed at the time that she was working with The Block producers to rectify the issue as quickly as possible. However, journalists with Channel Nine's A Current Affair said producers of the renovation show had cut ties with Emese completely. Emese also claimed to have transferred $4million to the network for the house from her ANZ Advantage account. While ANZ couldn't comment due to privacy reasons, they did refute Fajk claims as the bank's daily transfer limit was just $25,000. Fajk, who has since left Australia for Europe, claimed she was simply naïve about the process of purchasing a property at auction. 'My fault in all this was that I did not know the purchase process and therefore was unable to spot mistakes or know what information was missing,' she said at the time. 'I'm a 29-year-old girl building my own life and I will not continue to suffer in silence and let this hang above my head as some sort of dark cloud.' Emese's story shockingly doesn't end there, as she again made headlines as a 'conwoman' this year when she emerged as a participant in the Ukraine-Russia war. After allegedly ripping off her landlord and boyfriend on a Portuguese island in 2021, she popped up as a communications director for the Ukrainian Foreign Legion. Senior officers accused her of abusing her position for financial gain, including stealing a medical supply shipment, and potentially being a Russian spy. The accusations were detailed in confidential dossiers prepared for Ukrainian Ground Forces Command by senior legion officers with substantial intelligence experience. Emese survived multiple attempts to bring her down, allegedly by forcing top Ukrainian army brass to protect her by threatening to leak damaging information. Donning the callsign 'Mockingjay', Emese was also caught on tape threatening to 'burn the [Ukraine] army to the ground' if she didn't get her way. Going Home Empty Handed The Block is known as the place where dreams come true after contestants sell off their homes for a massive profit. But Auction Day can be crushing for some Blockheads who suffer low bids - or worse, no sale at all. Fans were stunned in 2010 as they watched Brenton Couts and Cheryl 'Chez' Gravina face humiliation as their gorgeous three-bedroom Vaucluse pad fail to find a buyer. However, the quality found a silver lining only a week after the grand finale for $970,000 after bids failed to make the $880,000 reserve during The Block auction. Sadly, Amie Chambers and Katrina Godde in 2011 also went home empty handed on Auction Day. This was the first time The Block had filmed in Melbourne and the sisters had a reserve of $860,000. But after it was passed on during the finale the Richmond was later sold off for - $860,000. Another memorable Block bidding snafu came just last year when 'villains' Kristy and Brett Beams lashed out at their sales agent after pocketing a mere $65,000. The married couple, both 34, looked absolutely heartbroken upon hearing their house sold for just $3,035,000. 'Australia got what they wanted, so!' Kristy sniped. 'I hate to look ungrateful, $65K is massive to some people but we gave up three months of great jobs, it doesn't cover it,' Brett added. The pair then went to meet their fellow contestants and Kristy shocked them by lashing out when they applauded her, making a scene in front of them. 'Why would you clap? Sorry everyone, but our agent s**t the bed, they f**ked it up for us,' a furious Kristy ranted. The pair were touted as that year's 'villains' for feuding with Eliza and Liberty. The couple were outspoken throughout the season about the pair of gal pals, accusing them of 'cheating' and getting favoured treatment from producers.
