Fuel reduction project planned for Sandia Ranger District

H.Wilson1 hr ago
(KRQE) — A decision memo has been signed for a 'fuel reduction' project in Sandoval and Bernalillo Counties.

The US Forest Service said the North Sandia Fuels Reduction Project will begin this fall, first with initial phrases.

The project will target 2,965 acres in the Sandia Ranger District, and it's meant to maintain the forest's conditions. This means officials are trying to reduce wildfire risk and restore the area.

"The Forest Service thanks the public for their input and active engagement in the development of this project and looks forward to continued engagement and collaboration throughout implementation," reads a release from the Forest Service.

Video shot by the Yurok Tribe show that hundreds of salmon have made it to tributaries between the former Iron Gate and Copco dams, a hopeful sign for the newly freed waterway.

Children from East Africa, where heatwaves and floods have shuttered schools in recent months, are pushing for world leaders to protect their education - and their future - at the United Nations COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan. Siama, 17, from South Sudan, missed two weeks of school in April when temperatures surged to 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit). "Our country is a developing country so we do not have climate-resilient buildings ... and do not have ACs in school," she said.
