FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) shares that an arrest has been made after a police pursuit led to an injury crash south of downtown Sunday morning.

According to the department, officers with the FWPD saw a vehicle driving recklessly around 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of South Barr Street and East Oakdale Drive.

Due to the reckless driving, a traffic stop was attempted. However, FWPD says the vehicle did not stop, which initiated a police pursuit.

The police pursuit led north on South Lafayette Street until police say the vehicle being pursued rear-ended an uninvolved vehicle at the intersection of South Lafayette and East Dewald Streets.

The driver of the vehicle being pursued has been identified as 34-year-old Derrick Benson. He suffered minor injuries in the crash. Benson also had a passenger in his vehicle. They were taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The driver of the uninvolved vehicle was also injured and was taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition.

Speed and alcohol are suspected to be contributing factors in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department's FACT, ASU, and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office.

FWPD says Benson was arrested in connection to the crash Sunday morning.

He has been booked into the Allen County Jail and faces the preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury, operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, and criminal recklessness.
