The Georgia Department of Public Safety said Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year while AAA surmised 2 million people will travel , with 1.51 million of those people expected to be drivers.
Georgia Public Safety Commissioner Lt. Col. William W. Hitchens III advised drivers to be mindful of speed limits, wear seatbelts and inspect their vehicles ahead of their trips. He also encouraged people to not drive impaired or distracted and to be patient.
Authorities said drivers should observe traffic laws and signals, pay attention to large trucks and buses and be courteous to other drivers and pedestrians.
“The Georgia Department of Public Safety will show an increased focus on patrolling the interstates and highways this Thanksgiving season to deter unsafe driving behaviors and reduce crashes," Hitchens said in a news release.
"Administrative duties will be restricted during that time to direct increased personnel to those efforts. Remember, Thanksgiving is meant to be spent with family and friends, and you can only do that by arriving safely. However, if you do experience an emergency during your travels and need immediate assistance, please dial *GSP (*477).”
