ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A local automotive shop is helping girls become more confident about car maintenance and safety.

The "Garage Girls" car clinic, as it's called, was presented by Cameron Community Ministries and hosted at A5 Automotive on Dewey Avenue in Rochester. Thursday, experts taught participants how to change a tire and use tools like a digital gauge and a torque wrench.

"A lot of young people don't know how to work on a car, don't know how to change their oil, and it's just important to us," said Jonathan Hardin, director of community engagement at Cameron Ministries. "We have a lot of girl leaders at Cameron Community to teach them and give them this opportunity to learn and have fun."

A5 Automotive officials said events like these help women learn about cars and ask questions in a non-judgmental environment.

"Just because you're a girl, doesn't mean that you can't do it. You can do anything that you want and that's a lesson that I'm trying to instill in my daughter here, Brooklyn," said James Sabado, the owner of A5 Automotive. "Whatever it is that she wants to she can do it because of her gender, it doesn't limit her."

Officials said they initially had ten spots open for the event, but due to the popularity, they had to increase that number. They also said they hope to do more events like this in the future.
