Gas prices keep going down

PLATTSBURGH — The nation's average price of gasoline has declined for a seventh week, down 6.9 cents from last week, and stands at $3.15 per gallon, and in New York state, prices are down 5.6 cents averaging $3.31 per gallon Monday according to GasBuddy's survey of 6,118 stations in New York.

Prices in New York are 21.5 cents lower than a month ago and 57.0 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

According to GasBuddy data, the national average is down 26.2 cents per gallon compared to a month ago and 70.5 cents lower than a year ago.

"Gasoline prices continue to crumble across nearly the entire nation, with average prices below $3 per gallon in 18 states, with some 65,000 stations selling below that psychological mark. Diesel prices are also falling and are at their lowest level in nearly 1,000 days," Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said.

"With the change to winter gasoline happening today at most stations across the country, the outlook is bright for the national average to continue to make a run at falling to $2.99 per gallon for the first time since 2021. But while nearly all states are seeing prices drop, refinery maintenance and some outages at California refineries have led to tight supply and rising prices—a situation I hope can be remedied by the end of the month and help California join in on the decline."

According to GasBuddy demand data, U.S. retail gasoline demand increased 0.2 percent during the week ending Saturday, Sept. 14.

The most common price per gallon encountered by motorists stands at $2.99, unchanged compared to last week.

The top 10% of stations in the country average $4.46 per gallon and the bottom 10% average $2.53 per gallon.

The states with the lowest average prices per gallon are Texas at $2.68, Tennessee and Mississippi tied at $2.69

California, Hawaii and Washington average the highest prices per gallon at $4.68, $4.58 and $4.07 respectively.
