Gators get good prognosis on injured quarterback DJ Lagway

In a season rife with bad breaks, Billy Napier finally might have caught one.

The beleaguered Gators coach said Monday that the soft-tissue injury suffered Saturday by quarterback DJ Lagway against Georgia isn't as severe as initially feared, adding the dual-threat freshman hasn't been ruled out for Saturday's game at No. 5 Texas.

"Less significant than we anticipated, and he's been doing well so far this morning," Napier told reporters early Monday afternoon in Gainesville. "We have not completely ruled him out. I think a lot of that will be to be determined as we move our way throughout the week, so that's a good thing for all involved, and certainly for DJ."

Thrust into the starting role two games ago after sixth-year senior Graham Mertz tore his ACL at Tennessee on Oct. 12, Lagway appeared to injure his left hamstring on a short run in the second quarter Saturday. He almost immediately grabbed the back of his upper left leg upon landing, and ultimately had to be carted off EverBank Field.

But an MRI taken Sunday yielded a more positive scenario.

"Soft tissue, I think it's a very subjective injury, and this one proved to be that," Napier said. "Ultimately, you've got to get to the MRI to find out how much damage there is. That's what we did."
