YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Gene Popovnak, 87 of Youngstown, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, November 7, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family in the comfort of his home.

Gene was born on October 9, 1937, in Youngstown a son of the late John and Anne Gregory Popovnak and lived in the area most of his life.

He attended Wilson High School .

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, stationed aboard the USS New Jersey (BB-62) during the Korean War. His time in the Navy remained a cherished chapter in his life.

Following his military service, Gene worked for many years at Youngstown Steel Door before joining the United States Postal Service in downtown Youngstown. There, he worked diligently in the maintenance department until his retirement in 1999.

Gene was known for his willingness to help others, whether they were neighbors, friends, or family. He valued his time with his family and was a constant, supportive presence in their lives.

Gene is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jeanne M. Jones Popovnak, whom he married January 12, 1962; his four daughters, Margaret (William) Mars of Austintown, Kathryn (Joseph) Narvet of Salem, Jackie Kelso (Dwayne) Childers of Salem and Ann Marie Lepowsky of Austintown; six grandchildren, Stephen (Amanda) Popovnak, Mark Kelso, Paige Lepowsky, Jake Narvet, Dakota Childers and Cheyenne Childers and two great-grandchildren, Grayson and Mila Popovnak. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Sharon Popovnak of McCormick, South Carolina and his brother-in-law, Jack Jones of Poland.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn Eileen Popovnak; his grandson, Matthew "MK" Kelso; his sister, Dorothy Kollar and his brother, John Popovnak.

Per Gene's wishes, there will be no calling hours or services.

Gene's legacy of love, generosity, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
