Georgia 2024 election results come in, Raffensperger speaks on Election Day
ATLANTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Hours after the polls closed in Georgia, results are coming in for the 2024 presidential election.
Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican nominee former President Donald Trump battled for Georgia's crucial 16 electoral votes.
So far, 93 percent of precincts are reporting, with tallied votes showing a lead for Trump.
There was a bit of a delay at some polling precincts in metro Atlanta due to bomb threat hoaxes including Cobb County, Gwinnett County, DeKalb County and Fulton County that delayed polling by about an hour. The secretary of state says those were due to Russian interference and they are investigating that along with the FBI.
The secretary of state says wait times were short with an average of two minutes in the state and they are quite pleased with most counties that did turn in results within one hour of polls closing.
"You know years ago, we didn't have accountability and I made sure we got that in too," said GA Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger. "Accountability of the counties, but also we came alongside them. So I didn't just want accountability but when you got in there with SB 202, we got alongside them, so it's a little bit of carrots and sticks. So, we had accountability, but we gave them tools to be successful."
The secretary of state says more than 1 million people voted today, and more than 4 million during early voting with a record 5.2 million votes overall.
They are still waiting for the 10,000 overseas and military ballots to come in by Friday.
Back in 2020, Georgia flipped blue for the first time in nearly three decades, with President Joe Biden beating Donald Trump by about 12,000 votes.
