Giants news, 11/28: Joe Schoen speaks, Daniel Jones, Tommy DeVito, more headlines
J.Johnson3 months ago
Good morning, New York Giantsfans! Takeaways from Joe Schoen’s bye week press conference where he answered question about the rocky start to the season, the Leonard Williams trade, roster construction, if Evan Neal will be moved to guard next year, why the offensive line hasn’t been good, taking the blame for Eric Gray being used as a punt and kickoff returner and ownership support. As for the quarterback position in 2024, Schoen said “the expectation is when Daniel’s healthy he will be our starting quarterback...We don’t have a crystal ball in terms of how the rehab is going to go, and different patients respond differently to these surgeries. Whether there is going to be swelling in the knee or any setbacks. Nobody has a crystal ball on this, but that’s the expectation moving forward. More from Big Blue View Other Giant observations Schoen plainly laid out the situation. Jones tore the ACL in his right knee on Nov. 5 and underwent reconstructive surgery on Nov. 22. There are no guarantees Jones will be ready for the start of next season. With No. 2 quarterback Tyrod Taylor set to become an unrestricted free agent, Schoen said he’ll need to address the position this offseason. “I think we’re going to have to do something on the quarterback, whether it’s free agency or the draft,” Schoen said. A salty Nick Falato to those who have questioned Kayvon Thibodeaux Kayvon Thibodeaux and his lack of hustle. pic.twitter.com/8Z6a8DiTnD — Nick Falato November 27, 2023 “[Martindale] coaches well, but he also listens to everybody and listens to the things we may want to change throughout the week or even during the game, which I think is cool,” said cornerback Adoree’ Jackson. “And I feel like you can’t have somebody else coming in. It could be the same, but at the end of the day that’s like somebody saying you’re gonna have a new stepdad or a stepmom. But I want my daddy or momma. I don’t want no stepdad.” Jackson said he sees no sign of tension and “if that’s the case, they must need to get an Oscar or something. Good a– actors.” Taking the field on defense without Dexter Lawrence is not something the Giants are accustomed to doing. In his first four seasons, he did not miss a single game with an injury and the only game he missed was because of COVID-19. The Patriots averaged 4.7 yards per attempt and ran for 147 rushing yards. Hyatt acknowledged after the Giants’ 10-7 win against the New England Patriots that the NFL has humbled him. “You know, just going from averaging 100 yards to not really getting no 100 yards, or 50 yards,” said Hyatt after a five-catch, 109-yard performance. “So it was tough for me, but I decided I had to stick it through.” Now 4-8, the New York Giants are all but out of the Caleb Williams-Drake Maye NFL Draft sweepstakes. But here's something to cheer for the rest of the way: Sunday's win over the New England Patriots showed who could be a part of a turnaround in the near future. His ability as a football player was being mocked, as he was labeled the improbable one to whom the Giants turned at quarterback with Daniel Jones out for the season after ACL surgery and Tyrod Taylor on injured reserve due to cracked ribs. Now? DeVito is no longer the side show he was originally made out to be. He's actually proving he can play the position a whole lot better than anyone believed he could, perhaps even DeVito included, going back to when 32 teams let 259 picks pass in the NFL Draft this past spring without calling his name. Asked about the continuity of sticking with DeVito, who has played five NFL games with three starts, or switching back to the more experienced Taylor (88 games, 56 starts), Daboll said, "that's something we'll talk about. We'll talk about it all." Daboll explains coaching staff assignments during the bye week Coach Daboll's plan heading into the bye week
— GiantsTV November 27, 2023 But Schoen made it clear that he hasn't lost faith in the coach he brought with him from the Buffalo Bills . In fact, even though Daboll was voted the NFL's Coach of the Year last season, Schoen might be more impressed with the job Daboll has had to do during this difficult year. "Yeah, it's easy to lead when you're winning and you're out front," Schoen said. "Going through adversity you find out a lot about people. And it's been challenging for everybody in the building, including myself and Dabs. How you lead when things aren't going well, I think, is important. And I think Dabs has done a good job." A league source with ties to the coaching staff told Pro Football Network, when asked for a reaction on the situation Sunday evening, that “Daboll is an in-your-face coach, and he will always challenge them (his assistant coaches), and no one is spared. He’s on them constantly about improvement and wants answers.” “Saquon’s a captain, he comes to work every day,” he said. “I know there were some questions a couple weeks ago about still coming to work and the longevity and tread on the tires and all that stuff. He comes to work every day, he does everything we ask, he’s a great teammate... as you’re going through adversity I think he’s a big part of keeping the locker room together. I respect Saquon a lot and the way he’s handled himself through this entire process, and I have a lot of respect for Saquon.” Barkley hosts three young adults from Covenant House and three kids from Children of Promise, plus a chaperone from each organization, at every New York Giants home game. They’re asking me genuine questions, and I’m giving genuine answers about my life and how I got to where I am and the best advice I have for them.”.
