Giants WR reveals Tommy DeVito’s weird pregame habit
T.Davis3 months ago
New Jersey is falling in love with Tommy DeVito , and why not? He’s one of us — a guy who was born in Livingston, grew up in Cedar Grove and starred at Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey — and he’s the biggest Jersey underdog since those kids from Jersey City scared the hell out of the NCAA Tournament .BUY GIANTS TICKETS: VIVID SEATS He’s a third-string quarterback who’s getting his brains beaten in while playing behind a Giants offensive line that couldn’t stop tricycle traffic on a bike path, let alone NFL pass rushers, and yet he’s still winning games. He loves his Mom. He makes “whatsa matter for you?” hand gestures after touchdowns (or when he’s just arriving for the game ). Jealous Jets fans — who aren’t happy with their own Mama’s boy — are wondering, “ Why can’t we get a Tommy DeVito ?” And he’s doing it all for a few dollars over the NFL minimum salary. If they haven’t cast the mold for a bobblehead yet, they will soon. So, he can live at home, toss his smelly clothes into the hamper, sleep late during the bye week and leave wet towels on the floor. As far as Giants fans are concerned, Tommy Cutlets can do whatever he wants — even when he’s screwing with the first-round draft pick — and that includes skipping warmup throws. After Sunday’s 10-7 victory over the New England Patriots , wide receiver Jalin Hyatt revealed that even when DeVito starts, he comes right out of the bullpen without throwing a single practice pitch. “With Tommy, first of all, he doesn’t throw at warmups,” Hyatt said. “At first, when I saw that, I was like, ‘He didn’t throw at warmups. What quarterback doesn’t throw at warmups?’ But he goes out there and throws beautiful passes, so that just shows me how confident he is in himself and with his team.” Did Hyatt ever ask DeVito about that? “Yeah, I ask him all the time,” he said with a laugh. “I ask him every day about it. He’s like, ‘I don’t have to.’ I think it’s one of those things where he’s a game player and that’s what I respect about him most. We know when he goes out there on gameday [he’s ready], so honestly, I don’t question anything about what he does and doesn’t do.” DeVito, an undrafted rookie free agent, is the NFL’s best underdog story, with starter Daniel Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor injured. He finished 17-of-25 for 191 yards against the Patriots and didn’t turn the ball over for the second straight week. In five games, Devito has thrown six TDs and run for another while throwing three interceptions. He has been sacked 22 times. Hyatt, a third-round pick last spring, had five catches for a career-high 109 yards on Sunday. Hyatt said he and DeVito started building a rapport during training camp, when both were getting reps with the third-stringers. Now, they’re starters but still connecting like they’re on a back field somewhere. “It just goes to our preparation throughout the week,” Hyatt said. “Game-planning for teams that we were playing that week. Now we’re starting to build some confidence, and when you have a confident quarterback, you can do anything you want.” And he doesn’t even have to warm up.
