Giants-Patriots final score: Giants beat Patriots, 10-7

The New York Giants topped to the New England Patriots 10-7 on Sunday. The Giants rise to 4-8 and are officially on a winning streak.

Patriots’ placekicker Chad Ryland missed a 35-yard field goal attempt with :06 remaining that wold have forced overtime.

It was a cold, rainy afternoon in East Rutherford N.J., and a far cry from the classic games between the Giants and Patriots we all remember. This was a plodding and often ugly affair that could generously be called a “defensive struggle” that ultimately ended on a missed field goal as time expired.

In such a game it often comes down to which team makes the most mistakes, and in this case that was definitely the Patriots.

Feeding Jalin Hyatt Rookie wide receiver had just 12 catches on 22 targets coming into Week 12, but he made a convincing argument for a bigger role for the remainder of the season with 5 catches (on 6 targets) for 109 yards against the Patriots. He was the Giants’ offensive spark in the first half, putting them in scoring range with a pair of deep catches on the first drive (before a turnover ended it). He then converted a third and long with some nifty footwork, leading to Isaiah Hodgins’ touchdown to give the Giants the 7-0 lead late in the second quarter.

They kept the momentum alive in the second half with a huge 41-yard reception on third-and-16.

Opportunistic defense The Giants didn’t faced what anyone would call “good” offense this week (although we could probably call it “offensive”), but the defense took advantage.

Mac Jones started for the Patriots after a week of intrigue in which Bill Belichick wouldn’t comment on whether he or Bailey Zappe would get the start. Jones was, frankly, horrendous, with miscommunications, erratic passes, and throws into double (and triple) coverage. The Giants took advantage with a forced fumble and a pair of interceptions in the first half, the second of which eventually lead to their scoring drive.

Zappe was a bit better, but he struggled reading the Giants’ intricate defense as well, leading to a drive-killing interception of his own.

Deonte Banks, Bobby Okereke, and Xavier McKinney all had interceptions, while Kayvon Thibodeaux and Cam Brown had forced fumbles.

The Giants have feasted on sloppy offenses lately, with 34 points coming off of turnovers over the last two weeks.
