Giving back in Southern Arizona

Chick-fil-A: Arizona Chick-fil-A restaurants hosted a "Brownies for Benefit" fundraiser last month, donating a portion of the proceeds to the statewide organization Prevent Child Abuse Arizona for each chocolate fudge brownie sold over a five-day period.

This is the third consecutive year of this partnership. To date, Arizona Chick-fil-A restaurants have donated more than $70,000 to Prevent Child Abuse Arizona.

Catalina Rotary Club: Catalina Rotary Club raised $150,000 for Youth on Their Own and Integrative Touch. The rotary raised the funds by volunteering with the Tucson Rodeo.

Youth on Their Own provides resources and support to homeless and at-risk youth. Integrative Touch offers services aimed at enhancing the well-being and quality of life for those facing significant health challenges.

H.S. Lopez Family Foundation: The H.S. Lopez Family Foundation awarded $743,400 in grants to local organizations.

The foundation awards grants four times a year, focusing on projects in the areas of health, education and welfare.

The latest recipients are: Act One; Arizona Heroes Memorial; Arizona Opera Company; AZ Trauma & Acute Care Consortium; BorderLinks; Candelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern Arizona; Catholic University of America; Center for Victims of Torture; City Psalms; Community Share; Greater Vail Community Resources; Integrated Community Solutions to Active Violence Events; Interfaith Community Services; JobPath; La Frontera Center; Lead Guitar; Marana Schools 2340 Foundation; Our Family Services; Salpointe Catholic High School; Santa Cruz Community Foundation; Southern Arizona Children's Advocacy Center; the American Cancer Society; Tucson Botanical Gardens; Tucson Center for Women & Children (Emerge!); and University of Arizona Center for Leadership.

Tucson East Elk Lodge #2532: On Sept. 11, members of Tucson East Elk Lodge #2532 prepared and delivered a fried chicken dinner with all of the trimmings and dessert to members of Fire Station 16 and the Tucson Police Department's east-side station to commemorate 9/11 and to salute local first-responders.

In a separate effort, the lodge hosted a pancake breakfast to raise funds for a community U10 cheer team for a competition in California and a trip to Disneyland. The breakfast raised $600 and the lodge presented the team with $1,000 courtesy of the organization.
