A man involved in a Sept. 5 traffic crash on Route 3 near Swamp Road in Dededo has died, Guam Police Department spokesperson Officer Berlyn Savella said on Friday.

This is the 9th traffic fatality for 2024, Savella said.

As part of the investigation, GPD on Friday closed the road where the accident happened so that officers could conduct a mapping.

On Sept. 5, officers from the GPD Dededo Precinct responded to the scene where a man was transported to Guam Regional Medical City with injuries sustained in the collision.

Initially, the status of his injuries was unknown.

On Sept. 16, GPD's Highway Patrol Division received information that the injured passenger was pronounced dead after being taken off life support.

It was only on Friday that GPD confirmed the death.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends affected by this tragic loss," Savella said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that on Sept. 5, a vehicle was traveling in the inner northbound lane of Route 3 when another vehicle exited Swamp Road without yielding, Savella said.

The vehicle then made a U-turn, leading to a collision with the sedan on Route 3, which struck the left rear passenger door.

A passenger in the sedan sustained injuries and was transported to GRMC for medical attention. He died 11 days later, based on GPD info.

"This incident serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of road safety. We urge all community members to adhere to speed limits, practice defensive driving, and ensure that all passengers are wearing seat belts. The lives of our loved ones depend on our commitment to safety on the road," Savella said.
