GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island received nine new trees from a grant awarded by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. A tree planting ceremony was held at George Park Sunday to recognize the 500 trees being planted across the state.

According to the Nebraska Forest Service and Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, this is the best time of the year to plant trees.

The trees were planted by Grand Island Parks and Recreation officials and were assisted by the "Bat Busters," a local youth baseball team.

Carter Gusting, a catcher, shortstop and pitcher on the team, said he hopes the trees will represent growth for the community and upcoming season.

"I think that the trees are gonna represent how hard hard work can pay off, where if we take time planting these trees, people can have shade whenever they're watching the game," Gusting said.
