GRAPHIC: Passenger suing Delta claims spilled coffee left her with serious burns

SEATTLE (KING) - A flight back to Seattle on Delta Air Lines for a woman from Chehalis, Washington, quickly turned traumatic in December of last year.

"She's watching a movie, flight attendant puts a cup of burning hot coffee on her food tray and it ends up in her lap," Mark Lindquist, the passenger's attorney, claimed.

In the lawsuit filed Thursday by Lindquist' law firm, the woman, identified only as Cheryl, claims the coffee was boiling hot.

Pictures in the court documents show some of the burns on the women's upper legs and torso.

"This coffee was excessively hot, way beyond industry standards," Lindquist alleged. "Even the E.R. doctor was shocked that coffee this hot was served on an airplane."

The woman works as a flight attendant for another airline. She said she was given pain reliever, ice and a bandage that became embedded in her wound.

The lawsuit claims protocols for a medical emergency were not followed and that a lack of proper care worsened the injuries.

"First, you would expect they would have called out for a doctor or nurse or somebody who could give medical advice," Lindquist said. "In fact, Cheryl asked for that. Secondly, airlines also have a service where they can call to the ground and get remote medical advice from a doctor."

Delta Air Lines declined to comment when asked about the claims.

"Cheryl wants accountability here. She also wants to make sure this doesn't happen to any other airline passengers, and as someone who flies, I want that, too," Lindquist said.
