Grizzly bears love the snow too!

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has two different grizzly bears, Emmitt and Digger.

The zoo said Emmitt is 19 years old. Emmitt and Digger were adopted into the zoo in 2007 after being labeled as 'nuisance bears' at around two or three years old.

Digger and Emmitt were labeled as nuisance bears after several negative interactions with humans out in the wild. The zoo said many times, that after 'nuisance bears' receive multiple "strikes," its possible for them to be euthanized or relocated. Instead of reaching this unfortunate fate, the zoo decided to adopt the two troublesome twins in to the Rocky Mountain Wild at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

"...They live active and comfortable lives, away from the temptations that got them in trouble in the wild," the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo said. "They help guests learn how to keep wild bears wild, by securing trash and safely storing food in bear country."

During the winter, the bears' fluffy, thick coats and extra weight gained before winter keep them healthy and happy at the zoo. And when the bears get tired of the snow, they have access to dens and dry, comfortable beds.

"Grizzlies are native to the Rocky Mountain region, although they're not found in Colorado's wild places," the zoo said.

According to the zoo, grizzlies don't typically hibernate, instead, they gain enough weight too keep them content throughout the cold, winter seasons. Instead, grizzlies go through "torpor" in the winter.

"In torpor, body systems slow down and animals may sleep more, but they still wake up. In the summer and fall, our grizzlies want to eat, eat, eat," the zoo said. "When it starts to cool down, they're less interested in eating and have less energy, but they're still pretty active at the Zoo."
