A Waco elementary school was placed on secure hold Thursday after gunfire was exchanged outside the school while children were outside for physical education class.

Rapoport Academy Public School Superintendent Alexis Neumann said the incident happened at about 1:30 p.m. at the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Academy Elementary pre-K through first grade campus at 2000 J.J. Flewellen Road.

"While two classes were outside at PE on the sport court, two cars exchanged gunfire across the back portion of the yard," Neumann said in an email to parents.

"No students or staff were involved in the crossfire. Our staff quickly brought the students inside and we secured the campus. Law enforcement officers responded and have secured the area."

Waco police spokesperson Cierra Shipley said officers were called just after 1:30 p.m. for someone hearing shots fired near the school. Shipley said no victims were reported and no suspects were located.

Neumann said the administration will continue to be vigilant about the safety and well-being of students and staff.

"We understand that this experience may be emotionally challenging for everyone, including our dedicated elementary school staff. ... Should your child have any questions, or if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can support you and your family."

Rapoport Academy Public School is a public charter school in Waco that has a split elementary school, a middle school and a high school.
