Gunshots, SWAT response in Mandan tied to apparent suicide

Gunshots fired in northwestern Mandan on Monday night were connected to an apparent suicide, according to police.

Officers responded to a residence on Paulsen Drive Northwest around 8:40 p.m. in response to a request for a welfare check. The officers heard gunshots, set up a perimeter, and used a drone to determine there was a person in the backyard with a weapon. The West Dakota SWAT team was called to the scene.

Police and SWAT officers attempted for several hours to make contact with the person, before finding the person dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Police Department. The person was not identified.
