Hall of Fame Evangel coach Jenkins dies at 72

SPRINGFIELD, Mo–The Springfield sports community is mourning the loss of long time Evangel basketball coach Steve Jenkins.

Jenkins died Thursday at the age of 72, after battling health issues and was recently diagnosed with dementia.

Steve Jenkins graduated from Evangel, then became the head coach in 1982.

Jenkins coached 39 seasons, winning 692 games.

Steve Jenkins led Evangel to the 2002 NAIA D2 National Championship.

And was named the coach of the year.

Jenkins also coached golf and baseball at Evangel at various times during his basketball coaching career.

Evangel president Mike Rakes said Jenkins was a guiding force who shaped the lives of countless players, staff and the Evangel family.
