...about the election and what's next

Anthony asked Andrew Romano, who's been covering the 2024 election, to explain some of the main takeaways from Tuesday's results.

Anthony: Who propelled Trump to victory?

Andrew: Preliminary exit polls can be a bit fuzzy, but compared with 2020, they found that Trump's margins were 11 points better among young voters, 12 points better among rural voters, 25 points better among Latino voters and 33 points better among Latino men. Altogether, that helped lead to his victory.

Anthony: What impact will the GOP's control of the Senate have on Congress?

Andrew: A huge impact. Republicans will have at least 52 seats in the next Senate. They'll be able to confirm all of Trump's judicial appointees, potentially including younger Supreme Court justices. If the GOP also ends the filibuster and wins the House, there will be little to stop Trump from implementing his plans.

Anthony: When will we know that the House of Representatives has been called?

Andrew: It's going to take a while. Western states like California, Colorado and Washington — where more than a dozen toss-up races took place — are still (slowly) counting their ballots. Neither party is close to clinching a 218-seat majority.
