Harveys Lake Eliminated/ Mayflower’s Jeff Ankner Ends Harveys Lake’s Rally With Pitching Last Two Outs

WILKES-BARRE – Jeff Ankner went 4-for-4 with a double, home run and four
RBI as Mayflower eliminated Harveys Lake 14-13 on Wednesday in a District 16
Little League baseball loser’s bracket game.
In the final inning, Harveys Lake rallied for five runs, but Ankner took
the mound and got the last two outs for Mayflower. Jordan Sod also pitched 1.2
innings of relief to help keep Mayflower ahead. Derek Gentry hit 2-for-2 with
a double and two RBI and Zach Ellis went 2-for-4 with a run scored for
Mayflower.
Selena Adamshick went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
South Wilkes-Barre 4, Avoca/Dupont 3 (8)
AVOCA – In a loser’s bracket elimination game, Brian O’Donnell scored with
two outs in the eighth inning on a passed ball to keep South Wilkes-Barre
alive in the tournament.
O’Donnell came in as a pinch-runner, stole second base and moved to third
on a groundout to set up the dramatic finish.
Chris McGavin pitched the final two innings for the win, while starter John
Nargoski struck out 11 in his six innings of work.
Avoca/Dupont starter Brandon Mathews struck out 10 batters in six innings,
and teammate Jonathan Aston had two hits and a RBI.
Swoyersville 15, Wyoming/West Wyo. 3
SWOYERSVILLE – Chris Clocker and Matt Zielen combined on a three-hitter to
lead Swoyersville.
Josh Usefara had three hits for the winners while Joe Olejnick and Jay
Edwards added two hits apiece.
Nanticoke 11, Plains 0
NANTICOKE – Hannah Rubasky hurled a three-hitter and struck out seven to
earn the complete-game shutout for Nanticoke, which advanced to the winners’
bracket final at 6 p.m. on Saturday, when it will host Mountain Top.
At the plate for Nanticoke, Sammy Gow went 4-for-4 with two runs, Sarah
Bertoni went 2-for-3 with a run and Alicia Ludzake tripled.
Shelly Black singled for Plains.
Horlacher/Harveys Lake 16, East Mountain 4
Ashley Inman led Bob Horlacher/Harveys Lake with two hits while teammates
Ashley Metz, Schyler Yatsko, Kristy Komrowski and Jennifer O’Brien each added
a hit.
Katelyn Wojcik allowed four hits to earn the victory.
Jenna Sillaboy had two hits for East Mountain while Jessica Bednarczyk and
Marie Mahue each added a hit.
Back Mt. 28, Jenkins Twp. 1
DALLAS – Sarah Konopki, Sara Skammer, Mary Kate Osick and Sara Kohli
combined on a four-inning no-hitter to lead Back Mountain in a losers bracket
rout.
Offensively, Konopki had three hits, Skammer had two hits and Kristen Baker
doubled.
Stef Bartz scored the lone run for Jenkins Township.
D16 9-10 SOFTBALL
Nanticoke 10, Mountain Top 4
EXETER – Ari Grabowski tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven to help
defending champion Nanticoke down Mountain Top.
Allie Matulewski tripled, singled and drove in three runs and Mallory
Markowski had a pair of run-scoring singles for Nanticoke. Also for the
winners, Katie Wolfe also singled twice and had two RBI and Kaylee Schinski
had three singles.
Cecelia Schmid singled twice for Mountain Top.
Northwest/Newport 14, Plains 4
EXETER – Baylee Steininger, Brandylynn Macierowski and Sara Higgins
combined on a four-hitter.
Sara Gleco doubled and Sydney Kotch, Macierowski and Higgins all added two
singles for Northwest/Newport.
Back Mountain 26, Wyoming/West Wyo. 2 (4)
EXETER – Morgan Decker had four hits, including a home run and two triples,
and scored five runs to lead Back Mountain. Tiffany Oplinger also had four
hits, with a double and a triple, while scoring four runs.
Vanessa Parsons pitched all four innings for the win.
Liz Jones and Nina Meighan each had a hit for Wyoming/West Wyoming.
D16 JUNIOR BASEBALL
Kingston 14, Nanticoke/Newport Twp. 5
NEWPORT TWP. – Kenny Durling was the winning pitcher and also tripled as
Kingston stormed back to win a game suspended on Tuesday because of rain.
The game was resumed on Wednesday in the top of the third inning with
Nanticoke/Newport Township leading 5-4. Colin Maclean doubled twice and
singled, Adam Fleisher smacked a pair of triples, David Mackiewicz hit three
singles and Timmy Kuscavage doubled and singled twice for Kingston.
Vince Iona had a pair of singles and Robert Bertoni and Joey Zwiebel each
added hits for Nanticoke/Newport Township.
Back Mountain 13, Plains 3
DALLAS – Bobby Peron scattered five hits and struck out eight to earn the
pitching victory and had two hits at the plate to pace Back Mountain in a
five-inning win.
The game was resumed in the bottom of the fourth inning after being
suspended because of rain on Tuesday.
Tommy Youells had two hits, Mike Eckman and Justin Eimers doubled and Joe
Osick singled for Back Mountain.
Alex Grilli doubled and Jordan Flaherty singled.
Northwest 3, Jenkins Twp. 2
JENKINS TWP. – Jordan Yatsko tossed a three-hitter and struck out six to
help Northwest get by Jenkins Township on Tuesday.
Tom Smith led Northwest’s offense with triple, single and two RBI, while
teammates A.J. Mausteller (double) and Brett Sikora (single) added hits.
D16 SENIOR BASEBALL
South Wilkes-Barre 19, Nanticoke/Newport Twp. 2
WILKES-BARRE – Rob Hadvance earned the complete-game victory with a
four-hitter, struck out four and helped himself with a two-run homer in South
Wilkes-Barre’s win.
Vince Sperduto, Rob Lucinski and Kevin Kosakowski added three hits apiece.
Joe Scali paced Nanticoke/Newport Township with two hits.
