Hazleton Area approves school job openings

The Hazleton Area School Board voted unanimously to approve the postings of several key positions at the district including a human resources director, an elementary assistant superintendent and a supervisor of federal programs and alternative education.
The human resources position starts at a base salary of $60,000 per year, according to school officials. Salaries for the other openings were not discussed at Thursday’s meeting.
In other business:
* The board agreed to create a nursing assistant position at the Hazleton Area Academy of Science and to post the opening for prospective candidates.
* Board members voted to approve volunteers from the Magnolia Project to assist and mentor the high school’s female students in decision-making concerning teenage pregnancy, self-esteem, leadership, peer relations and job interviewing skills.
* The board agreed to purchase 85 tickets for Dorney Park in Allentown for students with perfect attendance. The money for the tickets will come from fines levied against students found guilty of violating the state’s truancy statutes.
* A unanimous vote was recorded to allow teachers and department chairpersons to engage in curriculum writing in the areas of science and math to revise the curriculum to align with the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards in literature and algebra.
