Helen Stokes

Mrs. Helen I. Stokes, 97, formerly of Charles Street, Luzerne, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening at River Street Manor, Wilkes-Barre, where she was a guest.
She was born in Luzerne on July 14, 1909, a daughter of the late Robert and Nellie (Banta) Carr. She graduated from Luzerne High School and Wyoming Seminary School of Business. Mrs. Stokes had resided in Luzerne for her entire life. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Pomeroy’s Department Store, Wilkes-Barre.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Robert J. Stokes; son Edward S.; brothers Silas, John and Edward Carr; sisters Hilda Evans and Sadie Wesley.
She was a member of Bennett Presbyterian Church, Luzerne, and was active with the Ladies Aid Society and the Sunday school class. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was a devoted mother. Surviving are her daughters, Helen and her husband, Donald Traver, Harveys Lake; Janet and her husband, James Dutter, Lancaster; Geraldine and her husband, James Angel, Elkhart, Ind.; a son, John and his wife Nancy Stokes, Trucksville; a sister, June Titus, Hatboro, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. from the Hugh B. Hughes & Son Funeral Home Inc., 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, with the Rev. James Quinn, pastor at Bennett Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Lawrence Reed, pastor at Emmanuel Assembly of God, Harveys Lake, officiating. The interment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas Township.
