Hernandez, Mets Hold Off Giants

W.Johnson3 months ago

NEW YORK — Orlando Hernandez gave up two quick hits and little else over seven impressive innings, and the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 4-2 Thursday night for their fifth win in six games.
Jose Reyes energized the Mets with a leadoff walk, his major league-leading 29th steal and an RBI single. Teammate Carlos Beltran bruised his right knee in a first-inning collision with Giants first baseman Rich Aurilia, and was pulled.
Barry Bonds was steamed — literally — on a quiet night in which he went 0-for-3 and stayed at 746 career home runs. The Giants clubhouse was a bit muggy two hours before gametime, and he called for an attendant to turn on the air conditioning.
Hernandez (3-1) had his scoreless-inning streak stopped at a career-high 19 while sending the Giants to their fifth loss in six tries.
Randy Winn led off the game with a single, Omar Vizquel followed with a triple and Aurilia hit a sacrifice fly. That was about all the Giants managed against El Duque — the only other runner they got against him was a walk to pitcher Matt Cain (2-5).
Padres 4, Pirates 2, 11 innings
PITTSBURGH — Mike Cameron hit a go-ahead homer in the 11th inning after tying it with a run-scoring double in the ninth, and San Diego overcame a disputed call taking away a home run in a win over Pittsburgh.
The Padres rallied from a two-run deficit and won despite a dominating outing by Pirates starter Shawn Chacon, who shut them out on three hits over seven innings.
Chacon outpitched Greg Maddux before San Diego came back to tie in the ninth against Salomon Torres on RBI doubles by Adrian Gonzalez and Cameron. Cameron had extra-base hits in each of his final three at-bats.
Cameron led off the 11th with his fifth homer, a drive into the right-field seats off reliever Josh Sharpless (0-1), making his third appearance since being called up from the minors. Josh Bard followed two pitches later with another drive that appeared to reach the right-field seats for his second homer.
Nationals 11, Dodgers 4
WASHINGTON — Ryan Zimmerman drove in four runs, Dmitri Young had four hits and Washington broke out of their hitting slump in a win over Los Angeles.
Zimmerman and Young sparked an offense that had been dormant during the first two games of the series. The Nationals mustered a total of nine hits the previous two nights while being outscored a combined 15-0, but had 14 hits in the finale of the three-game series.
Micah Bowie (2-2) made his third start of the season and gave up three runs in 5 1-3 innings. Closer Chad Cordero pitched the ninth for his eighth save, and is perfect in four chances since returning from the bereavement list May 14.
Brewers 4, Marlins 3
MILWAUKEE — Prince Fielder hit his league-leading 19th homer, J.J. Hardy drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth and Milwaukee beat Florida.
Corey Hart doubled with two outs in the eighth and Hardy followed with a single off Matt Lindstrom (0-2) for his team-leading 46th RBI.
The Marlins made a move to improve their bullpen late Thursday, agreeing to send reliever Randy Messenger to the San Francisco Giants for struggling closer Armando Benitez.
Neither Florida or San Francisco made an official announcement. Asked whether Benitez had been sent to the Marlins, agent Mike Powers said, “It’s a done deal.”
Astros 10, Reds 2
HOUSTON — Lance Berkman ended a slump with a three-run homer and Woody Williams had a season-high nine strikeouts as Houston snapped a 10-game losing streak with a win over Cincinnati.
Carlos Lee had a two-RBI double during a four-run third inning off Bronson Arroyo as the Astros won for just the second time in 14 games. One more loss would’ve matched the longest skid in franchise history, set in August 1995.
Williams (2-7) allowed seven hits and two walks in five innings. He threw 117 pitches, also a season high, to earn his first win in four starts.
