High price of living affecting non-profits this holiday season

PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) – Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here before you know it. Many give thanks and even donate extra money or items to nonprofits to spread holiday cheer. Some are finding that it is just not in their budget for the 2024 year however.

Sergeant Melissa White is the Salvation Army's core administrator in Princeton. She said food donations are especially on the downward end.

"We are still down right now. We are really struggling, especially like with the kettle wringing effort because of Thanksgiving being so late in the year. Many places won't let us come until the day after Thanksgiving," said Sgt. White.

The cost of college is quietly going down

Along with food, The Salvation Army also is known for their toy drives and angel trees. If those in the community wish to help, there are over 400 children on the trees this year.

"We have right at 400 children needing help this year, and so if anyone would like to help us with that, they can adopt one angel or if a church would like to take a family, we can do that," said Sgt. White

Sgt. White says the community can also donate money, food, and toys to The Salvation Army located on 300 Princeton Avenue.
