Superconference discussed

The football officers of the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valley Conference met
on Monday to discuss the realignment of the two conferences.
Based on the new classification of schools released by the PIAA, the group
discussed the proposal for the Northeastern Pennsylvania Football Conference.

The proposed conference would include three Divisions. Division I would
include six 4A schools, with Division 2 (3A) and Division 3 (1A-2A) divided
into north and south divisions.

Both the Lackawanna and WVC conferences will review the proposal and the
executive committee will meet again on Jan. 14 to format a schedule if it is
accepted by the two leagues. Since Friday, the PIAA has changed
Wallenpaupack’s classification from 4A to 3A and East Stroudsburg North from






LJC wins twice during the weekend

Former Bishop O’Reilly standout Tom Stambaugh continued his scoring for the
Lackawanna Junior College men’s basketball team during the weekend, helping
the Falcons (6-2) win twice.

On Saturday, Stambaugh had 21 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, one assist
and three blocked shots in a 101-83 victory over Delaware Tech. On Sunday, he
had 18 points, four rebounds, one steal, one assist and two blocks in a 94-55
rout of Mercer Community College.

Stambaugh is Lackawanna’s leading scorer and second-leading rebounder after
eight games.





Red Barons complete coaching staff

Marc Bombard will return for a fourth season with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
Red Barons, joined by two new coaches and a new trainer.

Bombard is 211-217 in his three seasons. The Red Barons finished 78-66 in

first round of the Governor’s Cup playoffs.

Former Major Leaguer Tony Scott will be the Red Barons’ hitting instructor.
Scott, 48, had the same role with Class A Clearwater in 1999. He also served
as a coach and roving outfield instructor in the Phillies organization. A
former outfielder, Scott played for Montreal, St. Louis and Houston.

Gorman Heimueller, 44, will be the pitching coach after serving in the same
capacity at Class AA Reading in 1999. Heimueller coached in the Los Angeles
Dodgers and Minnesota Twins’ minor league systems. He played 14 years in
professional baseball, recording a 3-6 record with a 4.67 ERA in two seasons
with the Oakland Athletics.

Clete Sigwart takes over as the team’s trainer after serving six years in
the same capacity with Clearwater.

Former coach Al LeBoeuf and trainer Craig Strobel have been assigned to
Class A Clearwater to remain closer to their Florida homes. Goose Gregson has
been promoted to the position of Phillies minor league pitching coordinator.







Thirteen members of the Wilkes-Barre YMCA Elite gymnastics team brought
home multiple awards from the Lebanon Classic last week.

Marissa Steve placed in every event and was fourth all-around. Kirsten
Litchman took home the gold on the floor while Gillian Bohunko took gold on
the vault.

In level 4 gymnastics, Steve captured the silver on vault while Stephanie
Hauer took sixth, Lauren Dawsey took seventh and Cassie Puhalla took ninth
place. On the beam, Puhalla and Steve tied for sixth place and Dawsey took
ninth.

In level 5, Marlena Mozal took bronze on the vault, finished fourth on the
bars and sixth for her all-around. On the vault, Jaclyn Gadomski placed
fourth, Chelsea Halsor and Laura Wingert placed fifth and Rebeccea Finch and
Samantha Mullery placed sixth.

Wingert also placed sixth on the floor and fifth on the beam. Bohunko was
eighth on the bars, seventh on the floor and eighth all-around. Finch was
fourth on the floor while Gadomski finished in sixth place. Level 3 took home
third place as a team and level 5 captured fifth place.

The team is coached by Joelle L. Rose and assisted by Eric Kline and
Heather Tahan. Members of the Wilkes-Barre YMCA Elite gymnastics team include,
in the front row, Jackie Gadomski and Samantha Mullery. In the second row are
Rebecca Finch, Marlena Mozal, Chelsea Halsor. In the third row are Meg
Mathewson, Paige Sturgeon, Laura Wingart and Kyla Halsor. Coaches Eric Kline
and Joelle L. Rose are in the back row.
