High School Football Notebook: High-scoring games highlight the region
The Fredericksburg area took a page of the playbook for the Big 12 this week with some high-scoring games and record scores across the board.
Three different teams scored 59 or more points in our coverage region: Louisa, King George and Stafford, the latter two scoring 60 or more points in a pair of wins. On top of that, four different games featured 70 or more total points, three featured 85 or more points and two had 100 combined points.
Riverbend and Brooke Point, going into halftime of their game, were on pace to score more than 130 points before things calmed down in the second half, leading to a 49-40 final score in favor of the Bears.
"We knew they were going to score a lot," Riverbend head coach Ed Webb said. "The question was could we stop them and can we match that offensively."
King George, coming off a 42-40 shootout victory over Eastern View, scored its most points in a game since last September against James Monroe in a 61-42 win over Spotsylvania on Friday.
That contest saw the Foxes put up nearly 450 yards of total offense. For their part, the Knights scored 40 or more points in a game for the first time since the 2022 season finale.
Stafford, averaging 41.7 points per game this season after Friday's win, outdid itself offensively as the Indians scored a season-high 66 points in a 66-44 victory over Massaponax.
It's the second time they've scored 60 or more points in a game. Stafford got back on track after a season-low 14 points in a 35-14 loss to Riverbend on Oct. 25.
It's defense, not offense, that has become a premium in this region, and Friday was a great example of that.
Cougars eye district title
Homecoming at Courtland on Friday was something to celebrate as the Cougars improved to 7-2 on the season and 5-1 in Battlefield District play with a last-minute victory over Caroline.
Quarterback Chieftain Watson found Kilan Jean–Paul Perry for a 35-yard receiving touchdown with 55 seconds left, and the ensuing successful 2-point conversion gave Courtland a touchdown lead over the visiting Cavaliers.
"We didn't hang our heads and were able to pull out the win," Courtland head coach J.C. Hall said. "... I'm proud of our guys. When we needed to, we stepped up tonight, we dug deep and found a way to win."
Caroline's final drive of the game came up short in the end, securing a homecoming victory and a share of second place in the district for Courtland, which, as of right now, sits just outside of first place.
A loss to the Foxes earlier in the season has all but secured a regular season district title for King George, but make no mistake about it, the Cougars, winners of four-straight games now, are finding their stride at the right time just before the playoffs.
Warriors a top seed
A sub-.500 campaign last season has been thrown by the wayside for Saint Michael, which finished off the regular season with a 40-28 win over Pope John in New Jersey on Saturday, improving to 8-1 on the year in the process.
The win secured the program's first eight-win season since 2022, when the Warriors finished 9-3 overall, winning the VISAA Division III state championship.
It also clinched the top seed and home-field advantage ahead of the Division I playoffs, which begin Saturday at 7 p.m. when Saint Michael hosts St. Christopher's (5-5) at Riverbend High School.
The playoffs run through Fredericksburg, a massive advantage for a team that has scored 34 points a game offensively and allowed 16.7 points a game defensively this season.
