WACO, Texas ( KWTX /Gray News) - Officials in Texas say two high school students were found unresponsive in a parked truck in a high school parking lot Tuesday morning.

According to the Waco Independent School District, school staff was alerted by other students at Waco High School about what they saw in the parking lot.

School district communications director Wendy Sledd said the students suffered accidental carbon monoxide poisoning while they were in the vehicle.

The vehicle they were in had a missing tailpipe on its muffler that allowed exhaust fumes to enter the cab of the truck, Sledd said.

Other high schoolers told school personnel and emergency responders responded and provided aid to the impacted students.

"We are grateful to the students who alerted school personnel for assistance and to emergency responders who arrived quickly to the scene. A crisis was averted by these individuals who saved these students' lives," Sledd said.

Additional information about the students' conditions was not immediately provided.
