Highway 4 fatal crashes: IDs released of three recent victims
Authorities on Tuesday identified two women and a man killed in three fatal crashes over a five-day span on Contra Costa County’s deadliest highway last week.

The totals since Jan. 1, 2021, are 51 dead in 42 fatal wrecks, an average of about one deadly crash every three weeks .
The California Highway Patrol is still searching for the driver who did not stop following a collision about 11:40 p.m. Friday near Newport Drive in Discovery Bay. That wreck killed 87-year-old pedestrian Beverly Sweeney, of Discovery Bay. She died at the scene.
Authorities did not provide a possible reason why Sweeney may have been out on a roadway so late at night. The CHP has not released any public information on the vehicle that hit Sweeney, and asked anyone with information to contact their office at or 925-646-4980.
About 16 hours after Sweeney’s death, the driver of a gray Dodge Charger going west on the highway lost control near the McEwen Road exit in Crockett and overturned. The crash ejected 31-year-old Kevin Parilla, of Concord, who died at the scene.
On Nov 13, the driver of a burgundy Honda Accord went off the right-hand shoulder while going east in Pittsburg and slammed into a concrete wall and center median at the Railroad Avenue exit . Authorities identified her as Nancy Avila Cervantes, 28, of Antioch.
The CHP is still awaiting toxicology reports to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in that crash.
