Hillary Scholten wins reelection in 3rd Congressional District
U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten, D-Grand Rapids, won her reelection bid in Michigan's 3rd Congressional District, as she defeated to Republican challenger Paul Hudson.
With an estimated 94% of the vote counted, Scholten received 54% of the vote while Hudson received 44%. That's based on unofficial results compiled by The Associated Press, which called the race around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
First elected two years ago, Scholten broke up decades of Republican representation for the Grand Rapids area, helped in part by new boundaries in a district that now covers Grand Rapids and much of the rest of Kent County, as well as Muskegon and Grand Haven, stretching out to the shores of Lake Michigan.
Cook Political Report had rated the race as "likely Democratic."
Scholten, a former U.S. Department of Justice attorney focused on immigration, has introduced legislation to crack down on child labor law violations, ensure competitiveness for small businesses against larger corporations and remove barriers for farmers market vendors to participate in federal meal assistance programs.
She's also a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus, a group of House lawmakers whose stated goal is to craft bipartisan solutions to problems the country faces.
Hudson leads the appellate division at the Miller Canfield law firm, and previously ran for a seat on the Michigan Supreme Court in 2022. He focused much of his campaign on economic issues and immigration, not unlike Republicans throughout the country.
