Hochul Awards Lindenhurst $2M To Repair Superstorm Sandy Damage
New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul visited Lindenhurst on Wednesday to award the village $2,179,891.50 to complete the Lindenhurst Shore Road Bulkhead Replacement Project.
Shore Road is one of only two ingress/egress routes for the over 950 residential properties east of the Little Neck Canal, south of Montauk Highway. According to village officials, the area was severely impacted during Superstorm Sandy, and Shore Road is still subject to chronic inundation, even during moderate storm events.
In 2016, the village obtained funding from FEMA, but it was only sufficient to replace around 700 linear feet of the existing bulkhead. Since then, the condition of the existing bulkhead has worsened, exhibiting lateral movement into the waterway and compromising the roadway.
"We thank Governor Hochul for this award that will help protect our vital Village roadway, and improve the quality of life for our Lindenhurst residents," said Mayor Michael Lavorata. "The ability to complete Phase II of the bulkhead replacement with this funding, as well as the $1 million awarded to us from Congressman Andrew Garbarino, without having to bond or raise taxes to cover the cost, is a blessing."
