PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - A German holiday tradition kicked off at the Peoria Expo Garden on Sunday, It is called Kristkindlmarkt.

It started in Germany right after the Reformation led by Martin Luther, who decided to take the original Catholic holiday and focus it more on Baby Jesus and Christianity.

This weekend was the 15th Annual Kriskindlmarkt in Peoria. Families could meet Santa and Mrs. Claus and shop from the 40 vendors selling jewelry, baked goods, and more.

Organizer Jeff Pulfer said, "It's a way to celebrate the kick-off of the Christmas season and get into the holiday spirit and also to learn more about the German culture."

The German festive tradition starts around the end of November and goes until Christmas Eve. To find out more about the German American Central Society, click here .
