Holiday travellers hit the roads ahead of Thanksgiving

BERKS COUNTY, Pa. - People across the country are hitting the roads for Turkey Day.

"Actually, pretty decent, not that much traffic. I've traveled before and it's been a lot worse," said Taylor Richards of Greensburg.

Nafis Hill will be celebrating in Philadelphia, his hometown.

"Coming out of Pittsburgh, the roads were a little heavy with traffic," said Hill.

Hill and many other drivers made a quick stop at the Bowmansville plaza on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

According to AAA, the average cost of a gallon of regular gas in the Reading area is $3.55, down about 14 cents from a month ago.

"Higher towards Pittsburgh, but a little cheaper going towards Philly, which is interesting," said Hill.

Tim Schade is also traveling from Pittsburgh. He is headed to Levittown.

"Usually on the Turnpike they're a little higher. They were good this year," said Schade.

Jonathan Staco is heading back to New Jersey.

"I'd say they're going back up. They're correlating with the holidays," said Staco.

Drivers are preparing for the trip back, too.

The Turnpike Commission estimates Saturday will be the next busiest travel day with 545,000 drivers on the road.

Hill said his family will be traveling back on Sunday.

"Sunday we're expecting a lot of heavy traffic," said Hill.

If you are heading back home this weekend, AAA said the worse time to travel will be between 3 and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
