HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — Holland Hospital Behavioral Health Services is expanding its inpatient unit.

Starting Sunday, the unit will include two more licensed psychiatric beds, according to a release from the hospital. The addition is expected to help about 100 more patients access mental health care each year.

The hospital says the extra beds are funded by a $3 million grant through the Michigan Health & Hospital Association, with funding appropriated by the state Legislature as part of the budget for fiscal year 2023.

According to the release, community members in Ottawa County identified mental health as a top issue in a 2023 assessment.

"As mental health continues to be a priority area of need for our community, we are pleased to offer expanded access to inpatient psychiatric treatment as a result of the addition of these two licensed psychiatric beds," said Mikaela Andrea, director of Behavioral Health Services at Holland Hospital, in a statement.

Holland Hospital is the only inpatient psychiatric care provider in the county, the release says.
