Holyoke honors Jeff Walsh for parade contributions

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Tuesday night was filled with pride for the city of Holyoke as the St. Patrick's Committee named its 62nd George E. O'Connell Award recipient.

Past recipients of the award gathered at the Elks Lodge in Holyoke to bestow that honor on Jeff Walsh.

Walsh has been a committee member since 2017—and is being recognized for his great contributions to the parade's fundraising efforts. Walsh's passion for music is what inspired him to create and bring before the committee in 2019 an entirely new event, known as "Marshal Mania."

"I'm shocked—I didn't expect this—for raising funds to put the parade on the road—its been a lot of fun," Walsh told 22News. The countdown begins for the 72nd Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade on Sunday, March 23rd, which will be aired live in its entirety on 22News and right here on WWLP.com.

Former U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, a New York Republican who resigned from Congress following a tax fraud conviction, is paralyzed from the chest down after being thrown from a horse during a polo tournament, according to friends who are raising funds to pay for the ex-lawmaker's medical care. Grimm, 54, suffered the devastating injury in September and is now being treated at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, where the late actor Christopher Reeve was treated after a similar equestrian accident in 1995, according to Vincent Ignizio, a friend of Grimm's who is a former New York City Council member. "It was a passion of his and he suffered a tragic accident at the end of September," said Ignizio, who has set up a GoFundMe account to pay for Grimm's medical care.

An eagled-eyed husband and wife were sailing in Hawaii when they spotted mysterious objects in the distance. Camila and Ryan Sullivan found five scuba divers drifting at sea. They told their rescuers that they were on a diving excursion. When they surfaced, they realized that they drifted away and their dive boat was nowhere to be found. The couple tried to pull them to safety but the sea was too rough. They radioed the U.S. Coast Guard. Twenty minutes later, help finally arrived.

A judge recused himself Tuesday from presiding over Arizona's fake electors case after an email surfaced in which he told fellow judges to speak out against attacks on Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign for the presidency. In the Aug. 29 email, Maricopa County Judge Bruce Cohen lamented that he didn't speak out when Harris was called a "DEI hire," believes that white men must speak out against unfair treatment of women, and raised a historical lesson from the Holocaust about the need to speak up when people are attacked. Cohen didn't specify who made the comment regarding Harris.
