CNN's Jake Tapper took his interview with Mike Johnson to a personal level as he quizzed the Republican House Speaker on how his support for President-elect Donald Trump's controversial Cabinet nominations squared with his Christian family values. Johnson has been asked by several Republican congressmen and senators to release the details in a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations that Matt Gaetz, who is Trump's pick for Attorney General, had sex with a 17-year-old. On the last night of their lives, Jagdish Patel, his wife and their two young children tried to slip into the U.S. across a near-empty stretch of the Canadian border. Wind chills reached minus 36 Fahrenheit (minus 38 Celsius) that night in January 2022 as the family from India set out on foot to meet a waiting van. Coordinating things in Canada, federal prosecutors say, was Harshkumar Patel, an experienced smuggler nicknamed "Dirty Harry."

Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party's prodigious fundraising operation raised more than $1 billion in her loss to Donald Trump, but the vice president is still pushing donors for more money after the election. Democrats are sending persistent appeals to Harris supporters without expressly asking them to cover any potential debts, enticing would-be donors instead with other matters: the Republican president-elect's picks for his upcoming administration and a handful of pending congressional contests where ballots are still being tallied. "The Harris campaign certainly spent more than they raised and is now busy trying to fundraise," said Adrian Hemond, a Democratic strategist from Michigan.

Are you sitting down? Seriously. You'll never believe this, all this misery and misfortune that continues smothering the Chicago Bears. With 4 minutes, 17 seconds to go Sunday at Soldier Field, the Bears had a 19-14 lead over the rival Green Bay Packers with their established and strong-minded defense on the field and ready for closing time. One big stop and the team's oh-so-painful losing ...

Speaking at an event about social media misinformation on Saturday at the G20 summit, Brazilian First Lady Janja Lula da Silva swore at billionaire Elon Musk, who owns the platform X. Lula da Silva, wife to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, spoke at length during her address about the way regulations can help stop the spread of false information online—policies that appear to be the antithesis of Musk's approach to running X, formerly known as Twitter. A giant female Chinook salmon flips on her side in the shallow water and wriggles wildly, using her tail to carve out a nest in the riverbed as her body glistens in the sunlight. Now, less than a month after those dams came down in the largest dam removal project in U.S. history, salmon are once more returning to spawn in cool creeks that have been cut off to them for generations. Video shot by the Yurok Tribe show that hundreds of salmon have made it to tributaries between the former Iron Gate and Copco dams, a hopeful sign for the newly freed waterway.
