WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Nearly four decades ago, Hospice of Wichita Falls began its Tree of Lights campaign, a crucial fundraiser that continues to support the organization's mission. Madeline Eubanks, Development Coordinator for Hospice of Wichita Falls, said that last year alone, Hospice of Wichita Falls provided more than 750 thousand dollars in charity care for patients. Eubanks said this year, they have added something new to help bring in more funds: the new "young philanthropist" initiative, where the school that raises the most funds for the Tree of Lights gets to bring their students to the tree-lighting event we cover every year. "It's important that we support our community and whether people have the ability to pay. Everyone deserves dignity and respect at the end of life," Eubanks said. You can donate in multiple ways, including texting, online, calling, or in person. The goal for this year is 300,000 dollars. The tree will be lit on November 19, and then the star will be turned off until the end of the campaign when we will find out if they met their goal to re-light the star. Watch for us in your inbox. Michael Grimm, a New York Republican who resigned from Congress following a tax fraud conviction, is paralyzed from the chest down after being thrown from a horse during a polo tournament, according to friends who are raising funds to pay for the ex-lawmaker's medical care. Grimm, 54, suffered the devastating injury in September and is now being treated at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, where the late actor Christopher Reeve was treated after a similar equestrian accident in 1995, according to Vincent Ignizio, a friend of Grimm's who is a former New York City Council member. "It was a passion of his and he suffered a tragic accident at the end of September," said Ignizio, who has set up a GoFundMe account to pay for Grimm's medical care.
