How Time Flies

How Time Flies is a daily feature looking back at Pantagraph archives to revisit what was happening in our community and region.

Nov. 17, 1924: The annual inspection tour of the Chicago and Alton starts today, with the special leaving Chicago this morning and covering the main line as far as Bloomington, remaining here for the night. The trip is for the purpose of inspecting all properties of the road such as lines, bridges, shops, roundhouses and all real and personal property. Also on this trip, the operation in the maintenance department in the previous eight months will be checked up and a decision reached in relation to reducing the forces to a winter basis.

Nov. 17, 1949: There's going to be a big fire at 2:30 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 20) in Carlock, and firefighters are inviting the public to watch them put it oout with the new $91,00 fire truck that arrived this week. Fire Chief Harvey Ropp said the conflagration will be set off the property behind the school, where an old garage and pile of rubber tires will be soaked in gasoline. It will be a test and demonstration for the benefit of fire department members, who are receiving instruction this week in operation of the new unit.

Nov. 17, 1974: For Bloomington-Normal children, a storyteller is no farther away than the telephone. About 275 children a day are taking advantage of the Dial-A-Story service sponsored by Withers and Normal public libraries. With two answering devices, the system is capable of handling about 500 calls a day.

Nov. 17, 1999: Heartland Community College's 47 full-time faculty union members will vote next week on whether to authorize a strike. About 25 teachers and a few supporters picketed in front of the college's Bloomington headquarters Tuesday night (Nov. 17) before the board of trustees met to act on the tax levy and other matters. Salaries and benefits remain at the heart of the rift.
