For both Michigan and Ohio State, it seems like the entire season has been a slow countdown to this game. Game. Both teams are 11-0 and while they’ve been tested at times this season, Saturday’s showdown figures to be the most difficult challenge yet for either side.

The stakes are as high as possible for Saturday’s game. As has been the case the past two years, the winner will represent the Big Ten East in the conference championship game, where Iowa awaits. The loser is very likely knocked out of playoff contention.

Michigan has won the last two meetings, including last season’s 45-23 win in Columbus in which the Wolverines dominated the second half. It propelled Michigan to a second straight Big Ten championship and playoff appearance. This season, Michigan has eyes on winning it all, and it’s hard to see that happening without a win on Saturday. Michigan will be without head coach Jim Harbaugh as he serves the third and final game of his Big Ten-issued suspension for his program’s alleged sign stealing.

Until the last two years, the Buckeyes dominated this rivalry for a stretch, losing just once since 2004. They find themselves as small underdogs this time, with goals of stopping Michigan from running wild and controlling the clock.

This matchup features the top two defenses in the country, with each allowing fewer than 10 points per game. Both defenses will have their hands full with playmakers like Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy and Blake Corum and Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. and TreVeyon Henderson.

This game is always meaningful, but this year’s winner earns more than just bragging rights.
